Export a virtual machine to a shared folder

This article describes how to export a virtual machine to a shared folder that is stored on a computer running Windows® Server 2008 or Windows® Vista.

This process requires the following steps:

  • Step 1: Establish the necessary permissions for the user account and the computer on the shared folder

  • Step 2: Export the virtual machine to the shared folder

Step 1: Establish the necessary permissions for the user account and the computer on the shared folder

Follow this procedure to set the necessary permissions on the network share.

Note

This procedure requires Administrator privileges on the computer that contains the shared folder.

To establish the permissions

  1. Log on to the computer that contains the shared folder.

  2. Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the shared folder, right-click the shared folder icon, and then click Properties.

  3. On the Sharing tab, click Advanced Sharing.

  4. In the Advanced Sharing dialog box, click Permissions.

  5. In the Permissions dialog box for the shared folder, look through the Group or user names list, for the names of the user account and the computer that will export the virtual machine.

Note

If the names are not included in the Group or user names list, take the following steps to add them.

  1. Click Add.

  2. In the Select Users, Computers, Service Accounts, or Groups dialog box, in the Enter the object name to select text box, type the user name and the computer name on separate lines, and then click Check Names.

Recognized object names will be underlined, and unrecognized names will prompt the **Name Not Found** dialog box.

Note

Be sure that the correct object types and locations are selected; otherwise, the object names you enter will not be recognized when you click Check Names.

  1. In the Group or user names list click the user name.

  2. In the Permissions dialog box for the user name, under the Allow column, select the Full Control check box.

  3. In the Group or user names list click the computer name.

  4. In the Permissions dialog box for the computer name, under the Allow column, select the Full Control check box.

  5. In the Permissions dialog box for the shared folder, click OK.

  6. In the Advanced Sharing dialog box, click OK.

  7. In the Properties dialog box, click Close.

Note

It may take several minutes for these changes to propagate through the network.

Step 2: Export the virtual machine to the shared folder

Follow this procedure to export the virtual machine to the shared folder.

To export the virtual machine

  1. Log on to the computer that hosts the virtual machine that you want to export, and then open the Hyper-V Manager.

  2. Navigate to the virtual machine that you want to export.

  3. In the Virtual Machines list box, click the name of the virtual machine that you want to export.

  4. On the Action menu, select Export.

  5. In the Export Virtual Machine dialog box, type or browse to the location of the shared folder where you want to export the virtual machine.

  6. Click Export.
