Tuning PRO Performance Thresholds
Applies To: Operations Manager 2007, Operations Manager 2007 R2, Virtual Machine Manager
The following tables list the performance thresholds and sampling methods for the PRO monitors in the VMM 2008 Management Pack. The tables present the monitors’ friendly names. For hosts, separate monitors target Hyper-V, Virtual Server, and VMware ESX Server hosts.
In the VMM 2008 R2 Management Pack, the memory and CPU thresholds for PRO remediation actions are based on the CPU and memory reserved for the host operating system in VMM, as shown in the following table.
PRO Monitors for Hosts
Monitor | Threshold Calculation | Sampling Interval | Calculation |
---|---|---|---|
PRO Memory Utilization |
Total host memory – VMM host memory reserve Default host memory reserve in VMM: 512 MB |
60 sec |
Average of past 3 samples |
PRO CPU Utilization |
Total host CPU – VMM host CPU reserve Default host CPU reserve in VMM: 20% |
60 sec |
Average of past 3 samples |
In VMM, host reserves set the resources that are reserved for use by the host operating system. The default host reserves are set for all hosts through the root host group, All Hosts. To change the host reserves for hosts in an individual host group, modify settings on the Host Reserves tab of the Host Group Properties dialog box in the VMM Administrator Console. To change the host reserves for an individual host, modify settings on the Reserves tab of the Host Properties dialog box. When host reserves are modified in VMM, the PRO performance thresholds are recalculated for the affected hosts.
Note
In the VMM 2008 Management Pack, the PRO monitors set a 75 percent CPU utilization threshold and a 90 percent memory utilization threshold for all hosts. Changing a threshold required creating an override in Operations Manager. (In the VMM 2008 R2 Management Pack, the default CPU utilization threshold was changed to 80 percent.)
