Alert Name:   Excel Services Application is not running locally

Event ID:   5271

Summary:   Excel Services Application supports the defining of load balancing between the Web application front end and the server for Excel Services Application. An option for load balancing is Local. However, this is a valid setting only if the Web front end and the server for Excel Services Application run on the same physical computer.

Symptoms:   One or more of the following symptoms might appear:

  • Delay in workbook load times.

  • This event appears in the event log: Event ID: 5271 Description: Load Balancing scheme is configured as Local; however local Excel Calculation Server is not running. Using default round robin load balancing scheme [User: <username>]

Cause:   The load-balancing scheme is set to Local but Excel Services Application is not running on that Web front end computer.

Resolution:   Change the load balancing scheme

  1. On Central Administration home page, click Application Management.

  2. On the Application Management page, under Service Applications, click Manage service applications.

  3. Click on the Excel Services Application. By default this has the name “Excel Service Application”.

  4. On the Manage Excel Services Application page, click Global Settings.

  5. On the Excel Services Application Settings page, under Load Balancing, select either Workbook URL or Round Robin with Health Check.

  6. Click OK.
