System requirements for Groove Server 2010

The article provides information about minimum and recommended hardware and software requirements for installing and running Microsoft Groove Server 2010 at your site.

Hardware requirements

The following table lists the minimum hardware specifications for Groove Server 2010:

Machine Requirements

  • SQL Server dedicated back-end for Groove Server Manager

  • Processor: 64-bit processor supporting AMD64 or Intel® EM64T instruction set

  • Processor speed: AMD 1.8GHz or better, or Intel 2.4 GHz or better

  • Processor quantity: 4 (minimum)

  • Memory: 8 GB or more

  • Disk: 500 GB (RAID disk array recommended)

IIS server front end for Groove Server Manager

  • Processor: 64-bit processor supporting AMD64 or Intel® EM64T instruction set

  • Processor speed: AMD 1.8GHz or better, or Intel 2.4 GHz or better

  • Processor quantity: 2 (minimum)

  • Memory: 4 GB or more

  • Disk: 40 GB (RAID disk array recommended)

    noteNote:

    Hyper-V virtual computers of equivalent specifications may be used.

Groove Server Relay

  • Processor: 64-bit processor supporting AMD64 or Intel® EM64T instruction set

  • Processor speed: AMD 1.8 gigahertz (GHz) or better, or Intel 2.4 GHz or better

  • Processor quantity: 4 (minimum)

  • Memory: 8 gigabytes (GB) or more

  • System volume: 50 GB or more (RAID disk array recommended)

  • Data volume: 700 GB or more (RAID disk array recommended)

  • Volume cluster size: Default for system volume; 4 kilobytes (KB) for data volume

  • Volume format: NTFS

  • RAID controller: High-Performance Hardware-Based Caching RAID controller with minimum of 128 MB of read/write cache

  • Disk subsystem performance: Disk subsystem for the data volume must be dedicated and support a sustained read/write throughput of at least 1,800 KB/second as measured by the provided DBWriteTest tool. See Testing Relay hardware throughput with DBWriteTest for information about how to run DBWriteTest to qualify your hardware.

  • Disk rotational speed: 10,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) minimum

noteNote:

Shared, compressed, or network volumes are not supported for the Microsoft Groove Server 2010 Relay installation or data directories.

noteNote:

Hyper-V virtual computers of equivalent specifications may be used, providing that the data volume is connected to a dedicated physical drive, not on a virtual hard disk drive (vhd).

noteNote:

Effective Relay server capacity can vary depending on the actual SharePoint Workspace 2010 client workload. For example, a typically heavy client workload effectively SharePoint Workspace 2010 reduces a Relay server’s capacity.

As specified in the documentation that accompanies Microsoft SharePoint Workspace.

Directory server

Windows Server 2008 Active Directory® server recommended. Hardware in place.

Groove audit server (optional supplement to Groove Server Manager)

Separate, dedicated Groove Server Manager front end. See Groove Server Manager IIS requirements, listed earlier in this section.

Software requirements for Groove Server 2010

  • Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 (or later versions), including ASP.NET

  • Microsoft® Internet Information Services (IIS) version 7.0 for Windows Server 2008

  • IIS compatibility features enabled.

  • Simple Message Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server

  • MSXML 6.0

  • Microsoft Groove Server 2010 Manager

Groove Server Relay

  • Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2

    ImportantImportant:

    To support Windows Server 2008 R2 for Groove Server 2010 Relay, you must install a Hotfix. Review the following KB article to obtain the Hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979350.

  • Internet Explorer 6 or a later version, for viewing the Relay administrative Web interface.

  • Microsoft Groove Server 2010 Relay

Browser

  • For accessing Groove Server administrative Web pages: Internet Explorer® 7.0 or Internet Explorer 8.0 on the administrative computer, with the following settings:

    • JavaScript, Cookies, and Forms enabled

    • Minimum Screen Resolution: 1024 by 768 pixels

    • Maximum Display DPI Setting: Normal size (96 DPI)

  • For accessing Groove Server Relay administrative Web pages: Internet Explorer 6 or a later version.

SharePoint Workspace client

  • Microsoft SharePoint Workspace 2010 (recommended) or Microsoft Office Groove 2007

Directory server

  • Windows Server 2008 Active Directory® or Windows Server 2003 Active Directory

Expertise required for Groove Server 2010

As a SharePoint Workspace administrator, you must have expertise in the following product areas:

  • Network and communications administration

    Windows Server 2008 administration

  • Internet Information Services (IIS)

  • SQL database administration

  • SMTP server administration

  • Active Directory administration (if Active Directory will be integrated with Groove Server Manager)

  • Internet Domain Name System (DNS) naming

  • Network security and topology

  • Software policy distribution

  • Desktop deployment

  • SharePoint Workspace client operation
