Use Compression on ARR

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista

This topic describes how to use the content encoding compression feature in Application Request Routing (ARR). You must have ARR and the disk-based cache feature configured before you can use this feature. If you have not configured the disk-based cache feature, see Configure and Enable Disk Cache in ARR.

Enable Compression on ARR

Web servers use the accept-encoding request header to compress responses into a format, such as Gzip, that the client can understand. The formats vary depending on the compression formats that the Web servers are capable of handling, but often the servers do not have this functionality enabled. If you are using ARR as a cache proxy server, you can configure ARR to compress responses even if the origin Web servers are not compressing the responses based on the accept-encoding header. If you configure ARR to compress responses, ARR will also cache content as compressed objects.

To enable compression on ARR

  1. Open IIS Manager.

  2. In the Connections pane, select the server node.

  3. In the Server pane, double-click Application Request Routing Cache.

  4. In the Actions pane, click Cache Configuration….

  5. On the Cache Configuration page, select the Enable compression check box.
