Removing the End Panel to Expose the I/O Connections
Commercial Microsoft Surface units include acrylic panels on all four sides and kick plates below the panels on the long sides of the Microsoft Surface unit.
To access the I/O connections, you must remove the kick plates and then remove acrylic panel on one end of the unit. The I/O connections are located on the end of the unit that has the On/Standby button on the underside in the bottom left corner. Removing the Kick Plates
The kick plates (labeled 2 in the following illustration) are indented under and run parallel to the acrylic side panels (labeled 1 in the following illustration). The ends of the kick plates curve around the corners of the unit, extend a few inches, and stop before the exposed heat vents. You must lift the ends of the unit to remove the kick plates.
To remove each kick plate
On the end of the kick plate that curves around the short end of the unit, press the end in, and then pull the kick plate down and away.
Repeat step 1 on the other end of the kick plate.
The kick plate is connected to the long side of the unit by two dart-like clips that plug (or snap) into connectors on the unit's frame.
Gently pull the kick plate out from the center of the long side.
Repeat the previous steps to remove the kick plate on the other side.
Removing the End Panel
To remove the end panel that covers the I/O connections
Loosen the two captive, cylindrical fasteners on the frame at the bottom of the unit, below the edge of the panel.
Use your hand or a Phillips-head screwdriver to turn each fastener counter-clockwise until it pulls away from the frame.
Grasp the end panel with your hands positioned on the top and bottom edges, and then push downward until the slide tabs disengage from the frame.
Pull the panel away and set it aside, being careful not to scratch the acrylic panel.
