Create an Application Compatibility Database

Updated: October 29, 2009

Applies To: Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2

The following procedure helps you create an application compatibility database with requested execution levels.

To create an application compatibility database

  1. Log on to a computer running Windows 7 as an administrator in Admin Approval Mode.

  2. Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.5, right-click Compatibility Administrator, and then click Run as administrator.

  3. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Yes.

  4. In Compatibility Administrator, click the Fix icon.

  5. On the Program information page, type the program name in the Name of the program to be fixed box, type the vendor name in the Name of the vendor for this program box, type the program file location in Program file location box, and then click Next.

  6. On the Compatibility Modes page, click None, and then click Next.

  7. On the Compatibility Fixes page, select the desired execution levels, and then click Next. For example, select the ElevateCreateProcess, ForceAdminAccess, LocalMappedObject, and VirtualizeHKCRLite compatibility fixes.

  8. On the Matching Information page, select the matching information for the application, and then click Finish.

    noteNote
Selecting SIZE and PE_CHECKSUM helps ensure that the application fix is not inadvertently applied to other applications that may have the same name as the target application.

  9. In the Compatibility Administrator dialog box, click File, and then click Save.

  10. Type a name for the application compatibility database, and then click OK.

    noteNote
Choose a descriptive name to help identify the application compatibility database. The name provided here is displayed in Programs and Features in Control Panel after the application compatibility database is installed by using the Sdbinst.exe command-line tool.

  11. In Save databaseName, select a name for the database file, and then click Save.

  12. Right-click the database that you just created, and then click Install. The new application fix is installed.

noteNote
Each application compatibility database created can contain one or more application compatibility fixes for targeted applications.
