System Administrator Tools

Commerce Server includes two tools for system administrators: Commerce Server Manager and Commerce Server Site Packager. System administrators use these tools to deploy and manage resources, sites, applications, and Web servers.

Commerce Server Manager

You use Commerce Server Manager to manage and configure Commerce Server 2002 resources, sites, applications, and Web servers. The Microsoft Management Console (MMC), a Windows-based interface that is included in Microsoft Windows 2000, hosts Commerce Server Manager.

Commerce Server Manager provides a common framework for managing Web sites within a single, integrated interface. The functionality in Commerce Server Manager is not available through either Web-based or command line administration. Instead, most of this functionality is accessed and manipulated through COM objects, so it is possible for you to write a Windows Script Host (WSH) script or an ASP page to extend the administration environment. For information about Commerce Server Manager, see Administering Commerce Server.

  • You cannot use Commerce Server Manager to manage Site Server 3.0 or Site Server 3.0, Commerce Edition (SSCE). For information about migrating a site from Site Server, see Upgrading from Site Server 3.0.

Commerce Server Site Packager

Site Packager is a deployment tool that you use to package your site and its applications and resources into a single file, and then move that file to another environment. You use it to package your Commerce Server site (including the IIS metabase settings), file system, resources from the Administration database, and SQL Server databases into a single file. You also use it to unpack the Commerce Server 2002 site (or portions of it) onto other computers.

For example, after developing or updating your site, you can use Site Packager to package and move your site from your development environment to your test environment, and then finally to your production environment.

In most cases, Site Packager is used for the initial deployment of your site. For future deployments, incremental updates, and rollbacks, use other tools such as Microsoft Application Center 2000 or other content management products. For information about Commerce Server Site Packager, see Using Site Packager.
