Editing a Category in a Base Catalog

You use the Catalog Editor module to edit the properties of an existing category in a base catalog. For example, you can change the price of the category, add or remove parent categories, and change the primary parent category.

  • You cannot edit internal category names. You can edit the name of the category that appears on your Web site.
  • When you add a new category to a base catalog, the category is automatically added to the associated virtual catalogs, depending on the inclusion rules.
  • You use the Catalog Editor module to grant permissions to Commerce Server Business Desk users who can edit this category. Do not use the Business Desk Permissions module.

To edit a category in a base catalog

  1. In Catalogs, click Catalog Editor.
  2. In the Catalogs screen, select the catalog from which you want to edit a category, and then click Open on the toolbar.
  3. In the Catalog Content - <Catalog Name> screen, in the Categories section, select the category you want to edit from the Categories list, and then click Edit.
  4. In the Catalog Editor – <Catalog Name> - (category) screen, the boxes that appear are based on the category definition of the category. More boxes may appear than those listed here. Do the following:
    Use this To do this
    Name Displays the internal name of the new category. You cannot edit this name. The maximum length is 100 characters. Category names must be unique in each catalog.

    This name is used in catalog reports.

    Display name Type the category name that is to be displayed on your Web site.
    Description Type a description for the category that is to be displayed on your Web site.
    Price Type a price for the category. The price is assigned to all the products in this category.

    Searchable Select this check box to have this category be a starting point for a specification search.

    When this check box is selected, this category will be listed on the Advanced Search page on the Web site.

  5. In the Assigned Categories section, do the following:
    Use this To do this
    Available parent categories Select parent categories to which you want to add the current category, and then click Add.
    Assigned parent categories Select the primary parent category, and then click Set.

    The primary parent category is used to determine the canonical path to that category.

    Available child categories Select child categories to which you want to add the current category, and then click Add.
  6. In the Category Relationships section, to add a new category relationship, click New, and then do the following:
    Use this To do this
    Relationship Type a name for the new relationship (for example, accessory).
    Item Type the name of the product or category in the relationship, or click the ellipsis button [] to display the Product Picker dialog box and select a category or product.
  7. Click Accept to save your edits.
  8. In the Security section, click Permissions.
  9. In the Accounts dialog box, select an account to which you want to grant or deny permissions to edit this category, or click Add Account to grant access to a new Windows group account.
  10. To save your edits and return to the Catalog - <Catalog Name> screen, click Save and go back on the toolbar.
  11. To publish the updated catalog on your Web site, click Publish a catalog on the toolbar.

The updated catalog is published on your Web site.
