Using the DPM System Recovery Tool Boot Client

Applies To: System Center Data Protection Manager 2007

The DPM System Recovery Tool Boot Client allows you to access computers that are locked-out or unbootable. To access an unbootable or locked-out computer with the boot client, boot the computer with a Boot Client CD. This will initialize the system.

The following events take place when initializing the system:

  1. Registering network components detects and loads drivers for network hardware.

  2. Configuring network components initializes the TCP/IP stack.

  3. Starting the DHCP client queries a DHCP server for an IP address.

  4. Starting the Network Location Awareness Service detects the logical network to which the computer is attached

The Boot Client screen displays the following information:

  • The name of the remote system performing the repairs.

  • The name that the boot client assigns to the session, which starts with "MININT".

  • The IP address assigned to the boot client session.

  • The version number of the boot client.

If the system has multiple network cards installed, or if you need to type an IP address, click Configure from the IP Address drop-down menu to open the DPM System Recovery Tool Boot Client TCP/IP Configuration window.

Note

  • The Boot Client will display Waiting for Connection until it establishes a connection to the remote system that will make the repairs.

  • Systems running the Boot Client automatically reboot after 24 hours of continuous operation. You should complete any recovery of computers running the Boot Client within this time.
