Applies To: Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG)

This topic provides the following information on how to configure caching in Forefront TMG secure Web gateway:

  • Prerequisites

  • Configuration overview

  • Configuration steps

Prerequisites

  • Caching can only be enabled on a disk drive using the NTFS file system.

  • The maximum size for a cache file on a single drive is 64 GB. If you require a larger cache store, configure caching on additional drives.

  • To run content download jobs, the Forefront TMG Job Scheduler service must be running.

Configuration overview

The caching feature is part of the Forefront TMG Web access policy. The configuration process consists of the following stages:

  • Enabling caching by allocating disk space on one or more disk drives on the Forefront TMG server. If you are running a Forefront TMG array, you must allocate caching space on each server in the array.

  • Configuring cache rules, to specify the types of content stored in the cache.

  • Configuring content download jobs, to proactively update the cache to anticipate client requests, thus improving performance and saving bandwidth.

For information, see To enable and configure caching.

Configuration steps

To enable and configure caching

  1. In the Forefront TMG Management console, in the tree, click the Web Access Policy node, and then under Related Tasks, click Configure Web Caching.

  2. On the Cache Drives tab, select the server, and then click Configure.

  3. Select the required drive. In Maximum cache size, specify the maximum size (in megabytes), and then click Set. If required, repeat this step to configure caching on additional drives. When you have finished allocating the required caching size, click OK.

  4. On the Cache Rules tab, click New. Follow the instructions in the wizard.

  5. On the Content Download tab, click New. Follow the instructions in the wizard.
