Event ID 2010 — Audio and Video Playback Redirection Configuration

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2

Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) 7.0 and Windows Server 2008 R2 support improved media playback experience by efficiently transporting audio-based and video-based multimedia in a compressed format within the RDP protocol. This feature enables users to experience smooth, reliable playback of multimedia video content played back through Windows Media Player. If the client supports audio and video playback redirection, it will receive the original compressed multimedia stream from the server and decode it locally for display.

Note: Audio and video playback requires less network bandwidth because the data sent over the network is compressed video instead of a series of bitmap images.

Resolve

Enable audio and video playback redirection

To resolve this issue, you must enable audio and video playback redirection by using either Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration or Group Policy.

Enable audio and video playback redirection by using Remote Deskop Session Host Configuration

To perform this procedure, you must have membership in the local Administrators group, or you must have been delegated the appropriate authority.

To enable audio and video playback redirection by using Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration:

  1. On the RD Session Host server, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, point to Remote Desktop Services, and then click Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration.
  2. Under the Connections heading, right-click RDP-Tcp, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Client Settings tab.
  4. Clear the Audio and video playback checkbox.

Change the settings in Group Policy

If the redirection of supported Plug and Play devices has been disabled by using Group Policy, change the Group Policy setting that is being applied to the RD Session Host server so that supported Plug and Play devices can be redirected.

Redirection of supported Plug and Play devices can be controlled by the following Group Policy settings:

  • The **Allow audio and video playback redirection **Group Policy setting. This Group Policy setting is located in Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Device and Resource Redirection. Note that the Group Policy setting will take precedence over the setting configured in Remote Desktop Session Host Configuration.
  • The Group Policy settings located in Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Device Installation\Device Installation Restrictions.

To configure the Group Policy setting in Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), use the Group Policy Management Console (GPMC). To configure the Group Policy setting locally on an RD Session Host server, use the Local Group Policy Editor. For more information about configuring Group Policy settings, see either the Local Group Policy Editor Help (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=143317) or the GPMC Help (https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=143867) in the Windows Server 2008 R2 Technical Library.
