Configuration

Secure dynamic DNS update has been configured and a domain controller is running on the same host as the DHCP server, but credentials for DNS update have not been configured.

If credentials for DNS update are not configured, DNS registrations will fail.

Using the DHCP MMC, configure IPv4 and IPv6 with credentials for dynamic DNS update.

A DHCP server can enable dynamic updates in the DNS namespace for any one of its clients that support these updates. Scope clients can use the DNS dynamic update protocol to update their host name-to-address mapping information whenever changes occur to their DHCP-assigned address. (This mapping information is stored in zones on the DNS server.) A DHCP server can perform updates on behalf of its DHCP clients to any DNS server, but it must first supply proper credentials.

Membership in the Administrators or DHCP Administrators group is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools and then click DHCP.

  2. In the console tree, right-clickIPv4, and then click Properties

  3. Click Advanced, click Credentials, type the credentials that the DHCP server supplies when registering names using DNS dynamic updates, and then click OK.

For updated detailed IT pro information about DNS and DHCP, see the Windows Server 2008 R2 documentation on the Microsoft TechNet Web site.
