Hyper-V: Enable all virtual network adapters configured for a virtual machine

Scan results might include this violation when you scan a server running Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 and integration services have not been upgraded in one or more of the virtual machines. Scan results will also report that the latest version of integration services have not been installed. In this case, upgrade integration services in all virtual machines identified in the scan results, and then rerun the scan. For instructions on upgrading integration services, see Hyper-V: Run the current version of integration services in all guest operating systems.

Issue

One or more network adapters may be disabled in a virtual machine.

Impact

Resolution

Use Device Manager in the guest operating system to enable all virtual network adapters. If the adapter is not required, use Hyper-V Manager to remove it from the virtual machine.

For instructions on how to use Device Manager, see Help in the guest operating system. For instructions on how to remove the virtual network adapter, see the following procedure.

By default, membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure. However, an administrator can use Authorization Manager to modify the authorization policy so that a user or group of users can complete this procedure. To remove a virtual network adapter

  1. Open Hyper-V Manager. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Hyper-V Manager.

  2. In the results pane, under Virtual Machines, select the virtual machine that you want to configure. The state of the virtual machine should be listed as Off. If it is not, right-click the virtual machine and then click Shut Down.

  3. In the Action pane, under the virtual machine name, click Settings.

  4. In the navigation pane, click the name of the network adapter.

  5. On the Network Adapter or Legacy Network Adapter page, to avoid potentially disrupting networking for the virtual machine, verify that you have selected the correct network adapter. Click Remove, and then click OK.
