Rule Name

The database checkpoint file (.chk) is missing or corrupted. The Microsoft Exchange Transport service is shutting down.

Explanation

This Error event indicates that the checkpoint file that is used by the specified message queue database or Content Filtering database on the Hub Transport server or Edge Transport is missing or corrupted. The checkpoint file tracks the transaction log entries that have been committed to the database. The checkpoint file is named Trn.chk. This file is always in the same location as the corresponding database file.

By default, the message queue database file is named Mail.que and is located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\TransportRoles\data\Queue. The location of the message queue database is controlled by the QueueDatabasePath parameter in the EdgeTransport.exe.config application configuration file that is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Bin.

By default, the Content Filtering database is named Ipfiltering.edb and is located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\TransportRoles\data\IPFilter. The location of the Content Filtering database is controlled by the IPFilterDatabasePath parameter in the EdgeTransport.exe.config application configuration file that is located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\Bin.

User Action

To resolve this error, follow these steps:

  1. Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Transport service is stopped.

  2. Delete the existing Trn.chk file that corresponds to the database name that is specified in the error message text.

  3. Start the Microsoft Exchange Transport service. The missing Trn.chk file will be created automatically.
