Plan to monitor the health of the search system (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint)

Applies to: FAST Search Server 2010

System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007 R2 is recommended to monitor Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint.

Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) 2007 provides a comprehensive monitoring suite for monitoring and managing a complete range of IT infrastructure and applications that include, but are not limited to, FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint, Microsoft SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008, IIS 7.0, and RAID/SAN hardware. The management pack for FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint supports SCOM 2007 SP1 and SCOM 2007 R2.

If you do not use a SCOM 2007 solution, you can gather monitoring data from monitoring interfaces like the Windows event log, performance counters, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) and the SharePoint Server Unified Logging Service (ULS). These tools also provide information to monitor system performance and health.

Plan to deploy SCOM

This article contains recommendations for a basic SCOM 2007 server setup that is most suitable for testing. Consult the Operations Manager 2007 Deployment Guide for extensive information on how to deploy and configure SCOM 2007.

There are several considerations and pre-requisites that you should be aware of before you install SCOM 2007.

Service packs and hot fixes

When you use SCOM 2007 SP1, it is important that you apply hotfixes from https://support.microsoft.com/kb/953141. Install these hotfixes on all managed servers and SCOM 2007 servers that run on Windows Server 2008. Service Pack 2 is required for Windows Server 2008. Use Windows Update to apply the latest security updates and other important updates before installation.

SQL Server instance

SCOM 2007 requires a SQL Server instance. The database connection is the main performance bottleneck, so plan for deployment accordingly. Both SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005 are supported for use with SCOM 2007 SP1. SQL Server Express is not a supported configuration.

SCOM 2007 and FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint co-existence

SCOM 2007 and FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint can co-exist on the same server. For production systems, one or more separate SCOM 2007 servers are recommended.

The SCOM 2007 server and managed servers must be in the same Active Directory domain if you are using the most basic Single Server, Single Management Group deployment scenario. For more advanced deployments, consult the Operations Manager 2007 Deployment Guide.

Refer to System Center Operations Manager TechCenter for more general information on SCOM 2007.

Important

For testing or lab deployments of SCOM 2007, the built-in account Local System (NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM) can be used for most services. This is not recommended for production environments. More flexible and secure deployment types use multiple domain user accounts and global security groups. For more information, see the article Security Considerations in the Operations Manager 2007 Deployment Guide.
