Multiple server deployment of the Query SSA (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint)

Applies to: FAST Search Server 2010

The FAST Search Query Search Service Application (SSA) provides the query-side integration between the FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint farm and the parent Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 farm. It also includes a crawl component and query component that handles the People Search index.

It is possible to scale out the Query SSA to run on multiple servers. In most cases this is only needed to provide failover for the search solution, as most of the query handling (and associated load) takes place within the FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint farm.

Note

You must only deploy one Query SSA associated with your Microsoft FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint farm. You can scale out the FAST Search Query SSA across multiple servers for performance and failover.

To add a query component

  1. Verify that the user account that is performing this procedure is a member of the Farm Administrators group.

  2. On the Home page of the SharePoint Server 2010 Central Administration, in the Application Management section, click Manage service applications.

  3. On the Service Applications page, click the name of the Query Search Service Application (SSA) to which you want to add a query component.

  4. On the Search Administration page, in the Search Application Topology section, click the Modify button.

  5. On the Manage Search Topology page, click a query component in the index partition that you want to modify, and then click Add Mirror.

  6. In the Add mirror query component dialog box, in the Server field, select the farm server to which you want to add the query component.

  7. Leave the content of the Location of Index field unchanged.

  8. In the Failover-only Query Component section, you can select the Set this query component as failover-only check box if you want the query component to receive queries only in the event of a failure of the primary query component in the same index partition.

  9. Click OK to add the new mirror query component to the job queue.

  10. On the Manage Search Topology page, click the Apply Topology Changes button to start the SharePoint timer job that will add the new mirror query component to the selected index partition.
