MultiPoint Server Logon Issues

Symptom

When you start MultiPoint Server, the process never goes past the logon screen and does not automatically log on to MultiPoint Server.

Cause

This can occur if the SRCShell user account is deleted, if the SRCShell account password is changed, or if the autologon settings for the MultiPoint Server system are changed. The SRCShell user account is a critical user account that allows MultiPoint Server to start and to display the screen to associate hardware with stations. If the system is not configured to autologon, or if it fails to autologon because the SRCShell user account is deleted, then the MultiPoint Server cannot start and stays at the logon screen.

Resolution

Use the following procedure to recreate the autologon settings for the SRCShell user account by disabling the AutoAdminLogon registry key. After you disable this registry key, when MultiPoint Server is restarted, the SRCShell user account is recreated and the registry keys for autologon are reset.

Warning

Directly editing the registry could make the computer that is running MultiPoint Server inoperable. We strongly recommend that you back up the registry before you make any changes to it. You should only change values in the registry that you understand or have been instructed to change by a source you trust.

To disable the AutoAdminLogon registry key

  1. Log on to MultiPoint Server as an administrator.

  2. Close MultiPoint Manager.

  3. At a command prompt, or on the Start menu in the Search box, type Regedit.exe.

  4. In Registry Editor, navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon\ and select the registry key named AutoAdminLogon.

  5. Right-click the AutoAdminLogon registry key, and then click Modify

  6. In the Edit dialog box, change the value to 0, and then click OK.

  7. Run MultiPoint Manager.

  8. Press the letter N on the keyboard. The computer starts in normal mode.

    Note

When MultiPoint Manager starts, it will detect the change in autologon settings, and will recreate the SRCShell user account and reset the registry settings.

  9. When MultiPoint Server is started the next time, the screen to associate hardware with stations should display as expected
