Configuring BranchCache in Forefront TMG (SP1)

Updated: February 1, 2011

Applies To: Forefront Threat Management Gateway (TMG)

Important

The information in this topic is relevant only for Forefront TMG SP1, and on computers that are running Windows Server 2008 R2.

This topic describes how to enable and configure BranchCache in Hosted Cache mode on Forefront TMG. BranchCache is a wide area network (WAN) bandwidth optimization technology that is included in some editions of the Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 operating systems. To optimize WAN bandwidth, BranchCache copies content from your main office content servers and caches the content at branch office locations, allowing client computers at branch offices to access the content locally rather than over the WAN. You can configure Forefront TMG to house the cache in Hosted Cache mode. For more information, see Planning for BranchCache (SP1).

To enable BranchCache on Forefront TMG

  1. In the Forefront TMG Management console, in the tree, click the Firewall Policy node.

  2. In the Tasks pane, click Configure BranchCache.

  3. On the General tab, select Enable BranchCache (Hosted Cache mode).

  4. On the Authentication tab, click Select and select the appropriate certificate from the list.

    Note

If Forefront TMG is part of a workgroup, do not select Require client computers to be members of the same domain as Forefront TMG.

  5. On the Storage tab, review the settings for the location of the cache and its relative size to the partition, and modify if necessary.
