Initiate the Connection

Updated: April 30, 2010

Applies To: Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2

Before performing this procedure, ensure that both routers are enabled for dial-up access, and then initiate the connection.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

To confirm that a router has permission to initiate an on-demand connection

  1. Open the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, right-click the router you want to configure, and then click Properties.

  2. On the Dial-in tab, confirm that either Allow access or Control access through NPS Network Policy is selected.

  3. If Control access through NPS Network Policy is selected, open the remote access network policy on the Network Policy Server (NPS), and then confirm that the access permission setting on the Overview page of the associated remote access network policy is set to Grant access.

To initiate the on-demand connection on the calling router

  • On the calling router, in the Routing and Remote Access snap-in, click Network Interfaces, right-click the demand-dial interface for which you want to initiate a connection, and then click Connect.

If the calling router uses a dial-up connection to the local ISP, the local ISP assigns the router a temporary IP address. You can confirm that this IP address exists by typing ipconfig at a command prompt.
