Understanding Outbound E-Mail Filtering in FOPE

Applies to: Forefront Online Protection for Exchange

Topic Last Modified: 2012-11-29

In Forefront Online Protection for Exchange (FOPE), all outbound email that is sent through the Hosted Filtering pool of email servers is scanned for viruses, Policy Filter rules matches, and spam characteristics before it is sent. This action helps reduce the risk of spam being sent from the Hosted Filtering environment, which could lead to some of the outbound IP addresses being blocked by companies and by third-party security organizations.

If you decide not to filter outbound email, it's possible that spam can be sent from an infected computer in your organization.

All domains that use the outbound email servers for Hosted Filtering must be added to your domains list and must be enabled in the FOPE Administration Center. In order to edit the settings described here, see Edit Domain Preferences.
