This section contains NextHop articles about all aspects related to Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 R2 Enterprise Voice (one of four key Office Communications Server 2007 R2 workloads), as well as connectivity to public switched telephone network (PSTN) and IP-PBX. In these articles, you will find information about how to configure Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Trunking and Direct SIP.

SIP Trunk in a Communications Server 2007 R2 topology enables an enterprise to connect its on-premises voice network to an Internet telephony service provider (ITSP), offering PSTN origination and termination.

Direct SIP enables interoperability between Communications Server 2007 R2 and third-party IP-PBX, such as Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Avaya’s CS1000, and so on. With Direct SIP, users who use Communications Server 2007 R2 can make and receive calls to IP phones or softphones that are connected to third-party IP-PBX.
