Service Pack 1 for Windows 7

Service Pack 1 is causing my laptop to push its limits. When I first got it (one year ago), it was quiet and its cpu usage was between 0.2-0.5 and RAM usage 22%. Later, Windows installed some updates and now its cpu usage is between 22-37% and the RAM is at 47% or higher. The laptop is noisy, and very hot.

I formatted my computer 3 days ago and it was back to its quiet and balanced self with its cpu and RAM usage levels back to when it was new. Now, Windows just updated again and now the same problem has returned.

There needs to be a software fix to return it to its normal levels. Is this update optional because it doesn't seem like it.

What did you do to make it such a resource hog?

[tfl - 06 01 12] Hi - and thanks for your post. Another explorer bug with SP1
There is another Explore bug, tested on 5 separate PC's, discovered in Windows 7 also happens in Vista. The bug is in the Windows Shell (Explorer.exe) and occurs when renaming a file using in-place editing in a certain way.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Make sure that you’ve set your preferences so that the file extension is shown.
2. Open a folder that contains some files.
3. Select a file.
4. Initiate an in-place edit on the selected file (left-click on the filename and wait for longer than the double-click delay).
5. Change the extension (I usually append an underscore so it can easily be undone). Just change the extension at this stage: don’t commit that change by pressing enter or clicking outside the edit control.
6. Left-click in the client area of the List View Control but ENSURE YOU DON’T click on any items it contains, click on some blank space.
7. A Message Box asking you confirmation will appear (“If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you sure you want to change it?”). Select “Yes”.

BUG: Windows now acts as if the user is trying to make a group selection and as the mouse is moved a selection rectangle is drawn even though the left mouse button isn’t held down.

I ruled out any interference by Shell Extensions by getting a list of third party DLLs loaded in explorer and disabling them.

The problem seem to be a result of the Message Box (Step 7) “stealing focus” because when I patched out the call that shows it using a debugger and made it behave as if “Yes” was selected without showing it the problem disappeared.
Win 7 home sp1 ie8 ie9

Trouble on the home front! Win7 sp1 is a crash. SP1 removed restore points, corrupted IE's, and what ever it did to the .net framework is beyond me. Need to reinstall Win 7 and not install SP1 till fix is available, hopefully in a SP2. Others I see have additional problems related to the SP1. All my hopes and prayers are with you. For those that have OEM OS, you'll need to contact manufacturer for new OS. Just noticed updates to .net framework. here I go again, gluten for punishment I am. Happy holidays all. clean and lean machine is a fast machine.

[tfl - 06 01 12] Hi - and thanks for your post. Uninstall all language packs before installing SP1
If you have many language packs installed, SP1 setup will fail with error C000009A, just like Windows Update fails to install the language packs if you select too many at a time.

This error is caused by a bug in RAM management, which causes setup to use up all available RAM when uninstalling or installing the language packs. SP1 setup may take for instance over 2 GB of RAM, and even if it succeeds, next reboot will fail with error C000009A.
In the case of SP1, the workload is double, as it apparently needs to uninstall all the old language packs before installing the ones updated to SP1 level.

Microsoft, please add a test scenario with all language packs installed, which is how many global or multilingual companies or organizations like universities use it.
Fatal error C0000034 applying update operation 291
First note: I had three updates in the list. Two of them were checked and the service pack was not checked for installation. I checked the service pack and launched the download and install. When i reached the installation point, i shut down all my running programs to help and then i went for a walk. When i came back, my screen was all dark except for the mouse cursor which was responsive. I waited because i had seen that previously and saw that the computer eventually resurects from that state which i think is linked to the screen saver.

Unfortunately, after some 15 minutes, nothing was going on. The three finger crash (Ctrl-Alt-Del) had no effect. I tried to mstsc into it from another computer and could not connect. I eventually used the power button to restart the computer.

It started to install a bunch of updates but then got stuck on this error after the next reboot. Rebooting returns to this error. I tried the startup repair but it could not fix the system saying it can not find and fix the issue. I went into the system restore and i saw that i had only one restore point which was the SP1. I ran the system restore but it said it failed on an unspecified error 0x80070002. it said that it had not changed the files. I tried it again to get the same result.

I rebooted the computer again and it started! I got to log in and it said that it had restored to the date and time just prior to the installation of the two fixes and the service pack. So, despite saying that it failed to restore, it ends up saying that it did?!

I let the first two fixes get installed and had no problems with them. Now, my machine is ready again to receive the SP1 and possibly crash my system again. My system is a plain and simple DELL computer that is five years old which is currently installed with dual boot with its original XP 32 bits and Windows 7 64 bits. There is no special hardware in it. I use it for Delphi development at work.

[tfl - 06 01 12] Hi - and thanks for your post. Blue screens after installing SP1
Installed SP1 on Windows 7 x64 on 6 month old DELL PC, with 8 GB memory, i5 intel chip; mostly MS software + Adobe PDF/shockwave/ + HP printer.

Frequently getting blue screens with page faults, service exceptions etc; frequent "windows explorer stopped working". Rolled back SP1. Was getting "GFXUI stop working" after the roll back and had to reinstall .net framework.

Wondering what broke with SP1 causing blue screens on a up-to-date (Windows update) MS-centric laptop.

[tfl - 06 01 12] Hi - and thanks for your post. Windows 7 (Home Premium) Service Pack 1 Install Causes Black Screen
I have automatic updates on, but checked for updates myself in my control panel and it said service pack 1. I downloaded and it installed fine. It went to the blue screen after and said configuring windows, and my screen was just black for 3 hours. It's only supposed to take a half hour to install. What do I do? I have files on my desktop (this happened to my desktop) that I need for college. Now all of a sudden microsoft answers is down for system maintenance. What a coincidence. They screw up, and are trying to make me pay for help! Does anyone remember their ring of death on the x box? I'm pretty sure that's what windows 7 service pack 1 did to my desktop. I hope they fix my pc.

SGS Phone Drivers Fail

When Connecting my Samsung Galaxy S (I900T) to my PC (Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit) SP1, Windows is supposed to detect the phone and install all the necessary drivers. My laptop running Windows 7 64-bit without SP1 recognised the phone properly and installed the proper drivers.

When I plug the Galaxy S into the PC running SP1 it recognises the device as Unknown device. The Samsung software Kies does not recognise a phone connected either. I have tried to reinstall drivers adn software over and over again. Initially the software used to work but since the initial first few successful times Windows 7 SP1 has not been able to recognise the phone and has not been able to install the drivers properly.

First of all the drivers (which are Microsoft drivers and not samsung ones) are rubbish and are causing many users this problem. Please get these drivers right so my phone can be connected to the PC.

This bug is only present when the phone's USB settings are set to Samsung Kies.

Action Center bug in SP1 RC
Once again the false reports by Action Center are occuring with Norton Internet Security 2011. Even NIS 2011 is definitely running the Action Center says it isn't. Even after multiple complete shut downs and reboots it still reports NIS 2011 as not running. This bug was also present before SP1 RC. Of course, as usual, Windows casts the blame on NIS 2011 stating "Norton Internet Security reports that it is turned off". If you click the Turn on Now button all it does is open the NIS 2011 interface.

Fatal Error during Installation of SP1
A common theme that seems to be occurring for most people; for me I had it on file 277 of 114000 (or however many there were). I have a Windows 7 64-bit laptop; the fatal error came up so I switched the laptop off. Now when I try to boot the laptop up, nothing happens at all.
No BIOS booting, no windows loading... Absolutely nothing. Trying to find my Windows CD to try reminding my laptop how to be a laptop again.

Thanks Microsoft for another problem.

loss of connectivity after installation
I installed sp1 just fine but now since I installed it I cannot connect to the internet, through wireless, (have not yet tried an Ethernet cord). I can connect to a wireless network and it says I have

access, but once I open firefox, chrome, explorer... it stays there is a remote server connection error, or that the connection to the remote server has timed out. I've tried many things but none have

work so far. maybe sp1 requires that I update the drivers for wireless connectivity????? otherwise its working well but I cannot connect to the internet.
sp1 download installer is a time bomb that will stop USB drives being read. Monopoly$oft - fail....
My USB has stopped reading. I repeat stopped, not never did, but just suddenly stopped reading any of my three USB drives.
They are all working (tested on XP machine).
The drive is visible in both Device Management and Disk Manager. Device Manager even shows it's name (Toshiba....).
Fortunately my mouse and other USB devices are unaffected.

What I have tried, without success -

1) Disconnected all USB devices then uninstalled all the USB controllers via Device Manager . Re-booted and all drivers reinstalled,
but no results.
b) used cmd prompt to open Device Manager. This was good for exposing hidden devices that were not currently installed, and which do not show when opening DM via the Start Menu. Uninstalled all entries - Still - no results.

2) I cannot change any settings in Disk Management - ie. drive letter. The error message is -
"Operation Failed... Disk Management console view is not up to date... refresh View"
Refreshing View does nothing. The same error comes up when running in Safe Mode.
Finding out how to get around this error could be the fix, but how do I get the DMC up to date if refresh does not work?

3) Attempts to reformat the USB Drive via Disk Manager get the error message - "Unexpected Error...." (also in safe mode).

4) In Device Manager there is an entry for a Storage Volume / Generic volume that is linked to the USB Drive.
In Properties / Device Status for that entry is a message -
"A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)".
How is this fixed ? Step 1 ? No, that did not work.
b) When properties for the USB Drive are opened in Device Manager / Disk Management or USB Controllers / USB Storage Device the device status is "working properly" - NOT....

5) I have read that Service Pack 1 (downloaded .exe ) causes this problem, but I have had it installed for over a month without this happening.
I uninstalled sp1 anyway with no results.
I have reinstalled sp1 via Windows Update - no results.

6) As my mouse interacts with USB I also uninstalled new drivers I installed about a week ago .
NO results.

7) Installed the latest chipset drivers for MB - no need to guess - No results.

8) Ran sfc /scannow and Mr (can't) FIXIT - Neither found problems - No results.

9) Checked with the registry for the upper / lower issue. Don't have that entry anyway - No results

10 Ran chkdsk - no results

SO - What next ????? It's either do a Windows 'Repair' or Reinstall - Or just go back to DVD's .

Do not use sp1 download installer the final release is still Beta - Monopoly$oft - fail - shame. Go back to school.

Ran Win 7 SP1 update. Now cannot run MS Word, Excel, etc.
Ran the "Critical Update" last night, which turned out to be SP1. Upon reboot, all looked fine, on the surface. Since it was the end of the day, I did not test drive anything right away.
This morning, logged in, and immediately noticed about 6 desktop shortcut icons missing. (This was not a clean-up of seldom used links, these were shortcuts to app's and files I use daily.) Found the source files and folders and sent them back to my desktop as shortcuts fine.

Big problems now are:
1. Excel will open its window and frame, but no sheet appears. Just the spinning circle mouse-pointer appears over a grey area where the sheet should be. Cannot open a new sheet or an existing xls file.
2. Word does almost the same thing: window opens, but this time no frame (that is, the dropdown menu selectors, and various toolbar buttons). Same grey area where all that should be, and the spinning circle mouse-pointer.
I have Open Office installed, and that app is still able to open and edit xls and doc files fine. (Go figure.)
Access works fine, though. So this issue is does not seem to affect all of the MS Office app's.

Other 3rd party app's are stalling, too. Probably trying to utilize something in Office or Word that assists with print-preview formatting or something. I'm no techno geek, just a handy user, so I won't hazard a guess what's wrong.

Machine has Win7 preinstalled from the retailer. It's an HP Compaq 500B Microtower, Pentium Dual Core CPU E5400 @ 2.7 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 32 bit.

Have already tried logging off and back on, and also tried a full restart. That has not helped.
Any ideas?

New: Also, cannot open Devices and Printers! Yeah, the one from the Start Menu! Same if I go through Control Panel -> View Devices and Printers.

Windows 7 sp1 update bug fix.
I believe that Windows 7 SP1 update holds the drivers in a temp folder. There is a bug in it that can not release the Drivers.

I went to <mtps:InstrumentedLink NavigateUrl="http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us" runat="server" xmlns:mtps="http://msdn2.microsoft.com/mtps">http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us</mtps:InstrumentedLink>

and click on the Microsoft Fix it. I do not know if it works with Windows 7 but works with XP

go to Control Panel, then Under Programs, Uninstall Programs. Delete all that are set with Windows 7. Browsers not working with SP1
I installed SP1 for Windows 7 (64 bit) 2 days ago. Since completing the installation, IE9, Firefox 4 and Chrome have stopped working. The browsers open but then fail to load any webpages, despite having a working internet connection.

Using other programmes I have confirmed that my internet connection is fine, e.g. I have been able to access the iTunes Store, download further Microsoft updates, etc.

To reiterate, my connection is fine but IE9, Firefox 4 and Chrome cannot now load webpages.

Please could someone suggest a fix?

Microsoft SP1 Shoddy Work
Yes I have helped many customers with Windows 7 SP1 x86 and x64 problems. I don 't know what ever happened to quality control, but my god the people in charge of SP1 development really messed this one up, maybe they were the people who designed that joke called Windows Vista.

My advice to anyone is not to bother with the SP1 download install, it is not really needed and can cause in a lot of cases more problems than it solves.

Although if you do a fresh install with a official Windows 7 with SP1 already slip-streamed in, installation disk, then you will encounter much less problems, but there are still some in that too just a less. Unfortunately the average user does not want to do a fresh windows install and then all their drivers and programs as well, most do not know how to anyway, and why should they!

I guess we will have to wait for SP2 and hopefully, Microsoft will have developed some common sense, which has been lacking for a long time now. Its no wonder they are losing ground to other operating systems and software, they are far to big and bulky to be effective in a rapidly expanding computing world, there is an old saying, too big for your boots, well what more can I say. Except I look forward to a complete restructure and streamlining of Microsoft, so it can be for effective and user friendly in this current computing world.
How I got Windows Sp1 on the machine.
Windows 7 to Windows 7 Sp1. Almost impossible. Online update failed, maybe 10 tries. Sp1 cd failed. Hours and hours.

Spoke to a Microsoft technician, spent two hours with me, but could not find a solution. Totally uninstalled Norton (not just disabled Norton), but no luck. Tried a suggested reinstall of Windows 7 from the Windows 7 installation disk as an update.... that installation failed and rolled back.

Tried the "readiness tool", etc. .... always a freeze or fail.

Finally, I wiped my C: drive clean, reinstalled the Windows 7 OS from scratch. Loaded Windows 7, attempted the online update of Sp1 along with all of the other updates. They all updated, EXCEPT SP1.

I loaded sp1 from the Microsoft Windows 7 Sp 1 update disk. That WORKED!! But remember the machine had nothing but Windows 7 on the drive.

Now I had Win 7, Sp 1 only on the machine.

So it was time to load Norton Internet Security 2011 on the machine. Reboot. Blue screen with about 3 seconds to read the blue screen.

Did the Norton reload 3 or 4 times. Always an immediate blue screen.

Dumped Norton, went to a Kapersky Internet Security 2012 trial.

The machine booted without problem. Any everything else is working without a problem.

I am now convinced that Sp1 will not work without an absolutely clean and updated Windows 7, and no Norton at all anywhere. Anything that is corrupt on the drive will cause the whole thing to fail on the install. And the problem is not correctable by a reinstall of Windows 7, except on a totally empty c:

And the machine is running faster than ever.

I have seen others mention a Norton and Windows Sp1 conflict. That was the problem for me.

SP1 and printers and DVD drives
I installed SP1 on Win 7 x64. Everything seems to be running smoothly. However, I can't print. Tried printing in Adobe Acrobat, it said I needed to install a printer to print. I checked, all my printers are installed. Tried rebooting, same problem. I exported to image, then printed the image. The print dialog box came up, it sent to the printer (HP Laserjet 2600n) but it only printed a completely black image. Tried repairing Acrobat, no effect. Tried uninstalling the printer, which worked, but now I can't install it again, as the installer fails to run under SP1.

Programs that ran fine under pre-SP1 now no longer can access the DVD drives. Because Windows can't see them. All my hard drives are there, but no removable drives.

Guess I'll just have to restore back to pre-SP1 and wait until SP2 comes out to fix SP1.....

>> Same problem here!
SP1 Corrupted User Profile
After installing SP1, my "Welcome" screen was visible for at least five minutes. Eventually, Windows 7 created a temporary profile. I tried rebooting and got the same result. I rolled my system back to a previous restore point. This is the first time that a Windows update has caused problems for me in recent years.

@BossDWeebe - Win7 SP1 fail
You mention in #5 that you installed Win7 SP1 over a month ago. Then in #6 you mention removing drivers you installed (assumption: having to do with your mouse) about a week ago.

Sounds like the problem may have been with the mouse drivers not necessarily Win7 SP1 since it ran for one month until you installed mouse drivers about a week ago.

Not to let Microsoft totally off the hook... are we going back to dll ***?

Acer Laptop external display colour problem
I use my Acer laptop with a Sony LCD TV as a second monitor. After installing Windows 7 SP1, the external display behaves strangely. During boot and loading of Windows everything looks normal on the extended desktop (cloned to the TV). A couple of seconds after the desktop appears the TV display turns to a grayish white - almost as if one of the colour channels have stopped working. This occurs is I connect via a VGA cable or an HDMI so it is not a cable problem. If I shut down, the correct colours come back as soon as the desktop disappears. Any one got any suggestions?

Windows 7 Home Premium w/SP1 (headaches!)
Have built a new machine similar to my previous that runs W7 PRO from the early release, bought the lighter Home Premium w/ SP1 and had no problems installing initially. First machine was a Gigabyte P4 board w/ 8G of RAM, Q9550 and a HighPoint raid board, was pretested for HW faults w/ no bad results, has been bomb proof! It is current w/ SP1 installed from MS and had no problems. Second machine is a Gigabyte P4 board w/ 16G of RAM, Q6700 and a HighPoint raid card via x1 PCIe. Tested machine with Memetest, Passmark and ran w/o errors 13 hours. Installed Home Premium x64 w/o problems, ran Win Updt, updated INF, installed drivers and my usual 3rd party SW. Running Virtual Box with 3 VMs but started getting blue screens at varying times. Took out the ATI 4650 GPU and installed ATI V4800 Fire Pro but still blue screening. First I had the WMI 10 entries in the Event Log under applications (Google it) and ran the vb script from the net, got rid of it but not the blue screens. One blue screen I copied was: CLFS.SYS (address: FFFFF88000CAE88 at FFFFF88000CA0000, datestamp 4a5bc11d. Another blue screen was: Stop: 0x0000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF80002E8EC8A, 0xFFFFF880031A8888, 0xFFFFF880031A80E0). I got rid of all non essential SW except Adobe Reader 9.4, HighPoint Raid Mgnt, Virtual Box (V4.08), ESET x64 Nod32 AV and isoRecorder x64. Most of the time the blues screen occurs shortly after boot up within the first couple of tasks or just before the login screen for windows. Have read a good amount of post on the net regarding the problems with the W7 w/SP1 OS copies. If anyone can clear up of some of this I would really appreciate it. About all I'm ready to do is try and find an OEM copy that does not have SP1 integrated into it and start over. If I knew I was in for this kind of frustration especially after building 4 new W7 Pro boxes w/o SP1 I would have just put BSD or Linux on the machine.

Do not install SP1 without backing up first.
I made the mistake of allowing auto update to install SP1 without backing up my system. I am using Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The system had hung during the install of SP1 and would not reboot. If I had had a back up it would not have been a big deal. It would still be extremely inconvenient, but a recoverable problem.

Lessons Learned

1. Disable Automatic updates permanently.
2. Perform a complete image back up of the system once a month.
3. After the back up use Windows Update to install the monthly system patches.
4. Never allow updates of any kind to occur without doing a back up first. If you allow automatic updates to occur, your system could be rebooted at any time and you may lose the use of your system and possibly lose data.
I downloaded the service pack 1 for Windows 7 and immediately was unable to open any attachment in my outlook lite mail. I am a very impatient student on limited time. I played witht the settings for a very short time - then just restored my system to rre-SP1.
I don't think I have ever had a service pack install to go smoothly. Frustrating.

Takes a lot of time to log in
While logging into my user account the personalized setting take a lot of time to load my setting

This has been happening since i installed the SP1 & i am certain it not because of any other reason (like Trojan horse ,spyware ,3rd party software )

also my mouse have been double clicking on its own even when i only single click

also there is a evaluation copy build 7601 msg on my screen

please help !!

Comment: Anyone get any resolution to this? I too had the same problem. Personalized setting is lost and it logs me in as a general user. I can no longer log in to my own account.

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Error C000009

After the installation of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 the system reboots, and before windows comes up the registry is updated. I get an Error C000009A applying update 109544 of 262832. I have used this hole working day to SOLVE it.

Windows 7 was not bootable. Windows 7 safe mode was not bootable, - stopping at classpnp.sys. I used the command prompt from rescue disk and Linux(!) to fix it. And then some important reading / tips on social.answers.microsoft.com.

Error message at boot:

Error C000009A applying update operation 109544 of 262832 (registry\ma... (no more place on screen)

After a couple of failed reboots I tried a system restore from Windows rescue disk, but windows update has somehow erased all my restore point !!! (Argh)

Then I looked in the log file c:\windows\winsxs\poqexec.log and found a reference to the error: (obs this folder has some 70.000+ files)

1cbd36fd5eb05f3: 74c, c000009a, 1abe7, 0, SetKeyValue ;\Registry\Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_microsoft-windows-e..atibility.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_pt-pt_0b9032dad0ee6ed8\6.1, 6.1.7600.16385, , AQ===

Then I tried to add this key to the registry using regedit from command prompt after booting to rescue disk. But repeated boots showed that registry didn't take / save my added key. (Strange, - I should be able to change the registry form the rescue disk, or?)

Next step was to boot a Linux live CD (Mandriva) to browse the windows system disk.

This way I found the c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml file (99 MB) and could open it in kwrite (in linux). I search for "atibility.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_pt-pt". Found that in line 114.808 (of over 300.000 lines). Add a ! after &lt; to make this xml line a comment. Saved the file. Rebooted and .. yes .., windows 7 updated some files, rebooted 2 times and then started as normal.

I'll guess MS has created a lot of angry people today!!!

The amd64_microsoft-windows-e..atibility.resources_... file is probably related to

a) ATI/AMD Graphics Cards (as in my system)

b) Windows MUI system (Multilingual User Interface) in windows 7 ultimate.

pt-pt is a code for some language. (Not mine, I am from Norway, NO.)

on Windows 7 ultimate (again)

--------------------
Comment (Chimel 02-26-2011): This error, if it's actually C000009A (lack of system resources) is usually caused by the language packs. Windows Update and SP1 setup have a memory leak or other RAM management bug that causes them to use up all the available memory. So it's not really a lack of system resources, there's usually plenty, but a bad management of these resources. The trick is to uninstall all language packs before installing SP1. If you're still stuck with the error at reboot and System Restore (F8 at boot time to get the advanced boot options,) search social.answers.microsoft.com for this error code, there's a solution involving the DISM tool.

Comment (2/27/11): This worked for me, thanks its a godsend. I booted to Windows 7 Recovery disc and launched notepad from the command prompt and made the change to the xml file... I used the <!-- and --> syntax for commenting out the xml node.

--------------------
Comment (03-30-2011): I also got this error today (downloading/updating through windows update), and I also have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with all languagepacks installed.. I did a repair (which actually does a restore), but I'll just wait for a fixed Service pack 1 (or Windows Update), as I'm not keen on first deinstalling all languagepacks and later reinstalling them as that will take way too much time, I already lost a whole morning on this problem...

Windows activation after installation of SP1

I am having the exact same problem;

So I have this computer with a Windows 7 Ultimate Operating System, then my Windows Update says that the "Service Pack 1 for Windows 7" download and install is, guess what, IMPORTANT. I did what it asked, and so far, no problems.
That, and until the bottom right corner of my screen says:"Windows 7Build 7601This copy of Windows is not genuine."
I checked System Properties and it gave me 21 days to register Service Pack 1. No one ever told me that I have to activate a critical update for Windows 7.Please explain. Thank you.

I Had to do a system restore to get my computer back to normal, Luckily it worked.

Comom Microsoft, get with it and fix these issues before you release service packs !!!

IE8 broken after Windows 7 SP1
After installing SP1 on a Dell Optiplex 980 with Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit, IE8 reports any page as in compatability mode and rendering is broken. www.google.com was a blank page but all the source code was there. A site like msn.com rendered with one small box and a few horizontal lines, again all the source code appear to be there. I used a restore point and then the sites rendered correctly. I tried installing the service pack twice with the same results.

As a note, Firefox worked fine after SP1 installed.
I wish Microsoft would spend more time fixing bugs BEFORE an update gets released!
I have Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit. The installation keeps failing when I use Windows Update. I tried booting into "Safe Mode", but Windows Update doesn't work in Safe Mode. I then went to this website, and the SP1 installation harps on using Windows Update! When you click on the options to do a manual download and install, it tells you to click "Download" after you've told it 64-bit or 32-bit. It never asks for 32-bit or 64-bit, and the files available for download don't tell you if they're 64-bit or 32-bit! That doesn't do me any good!

I turned off my Virus Protection (Norton Internet Security 2011) and tried using Windows Update. That didn't work.

The Windows Update keeps failing due to an unknown error. That doesn't do me any good!

I guess I'll have to wait until Microsoft comes up with an SP1 patch.

One of the funniest things about some of these updates is that they ask you to remove your virus scanning software before installing the update that will protect your PC from attacks. They're saying "Make your PC vulnerable to attacks so that you can install this update that makes your PC less vulnerable to attacks". Yeah, that makes a lot of sense!

Cannot Perform Backup After SP1
I could not perform a backup to an external hard drive after installing SP1 on Windows 7 Home Premium edition. I tried both the built in Windows backup utility as well as the utility that came with the external hard drive. Both seemed to fail at the point of creating a system image. The external hard drive seems to disconnect at that point, which kills the backup process. I never had an issue before SP1. I uninstalled SP1 and was able to perform the backup as I usually did. Did some searches to see if others had similar issues and how to resolve, but no luck.

SP1 OK!
I installed SP1 on a genuine Win 7 Home Premium installation on my Samsung RF510 laptop. Installation went fine, no signs of the machine slowing down and my Windows Experience benchmarks remain the same. Says it's still a registered copy too.

The only thing I did notice was that the programs that I had pinned to the Start Menu were not all there so I had to repin them. Network printers and periferals all worked as before.

Maybe I am fortunate in having bew hardware?

Printers on two machines unavalable and many un responsive processes

for some reason I had to delete and reinstall all my printers, before Autocad could see them.

My machine is also much slower and random programs (Autocad, iTunes, Opera, WHS Connector, Outlook, Excel, Acrobat.. .and more) go unresponsive on one of my machines at least once per reboot. I have had to reboot my machine at least twice a day since upgrading. My system reliability has also dropped from 8 to 3 since installing SP1

Windows 7 SP1 Fatal Error Fix
Fatal error C0000034 applying update operation 282 of ……..

It appears like this glitch deletes the restore points and thus you are unable to restore to a earlier time.

UPDATE: Warning: This fix will get you back into Windows, but the Service Pack will still not be installed properly. As a result, Windows will show that SP1 is installed, when in fact it is not. Or at least not properly.

UPDATE 2: Microsoft has confirmed that there is problem, but they are still investigating.

Microsoft Support Tech Recommended Fix:
A.Boot into Windows Recovery and choose command prompt then run the following commands (the OS partition is likely mapped as X: drive):
B.Reg load HKLM\BaseSystem X:\Windows\System32\config\SYSTEM
C.Reg Delete "HKLM\BaseSystem\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" /v SetupExecute
D.Reg add "HKLM\BaseSystem\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager" /v SetupExecute /t REG_MULTI_SZ
E.Reg unload HKLM\BaseSystem
F.Restart the Computer.
================================================================================================
If the above recommended fix doesn’t work try this:

A.Reboot your computer while it’s starting up.
B.When your computer starts up again, choose the option “Launch Startup Repair”When the Startup repair starts, click cancel.
C.After you click cancel it will show a box. Click “Don’t Send” Click the link “View advanced options for recovery and support”
D.In the new window click Command Prompt at the bottom.
E.In Command Prompt type this and press enter: X:\Windows\system32\notepad.exe (your OS partition is probably mapped as the X: drive)
F.Notepad will open. In notepad go to File–>Open.
G.Change the type of files notepad views from .txt to All Files
H.Now in Notepad, go to X:\Windows\winsxs\ (or whichever drive Windows is installed on)
I.In that folder, find pending.xml and make a copy of it
J.Now open the original pending.xml (it will load really slow because the file is huge)
K.Press CNTRL+F and search for the following exactly: 0000000000000000.cdf-ms
L.Delete the following text (yours may be a little different):
<Checkpoint/>
<DeleteFile path="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMaps\_0000000000000000.cdf-ms"/>
<MoveFile source="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\Temp\PendingRenames\e56db1db48d4cb0199440000b01de419._0000000000000000.cdf-ms" destination="\SystemRoot\WinSxS\FileMa\_0000000000000000.cdf-ms"/>
Your PC might not have all 3 sections of code (<Checkpoint>, <DeleteFile>, <MoveFile>). Just make sure you delete section “Checkpoint” and whatever other sections have “000000000000000.cdf-ms”. They will be right next to eachother.
M.Save the file, close notepad, close command prompt, restart your computer.
N.Once your computer starts up, do a normal startup (it may stall for 5-10 minutes at the “starting windows” screen, but leave it going) and the Service Pack will install some more stuff and restart a few times and then everything should be working! For some people, it reverts everything and cancels the service pack installation. For other people, the service pack installation completes. Either result is fine.
=================================================================================================
IF SP1 needs to be uninstalled for whatever reason, try uninstalling SP1 using the Command Prompt:
1.Click the Start button , and then, in the search box, type Command Prompt.
2.In the list of results, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3.Type the following: wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:976932

Suggestions.......
Before you EVER install a service pack, verify that your hardware and software that you use support it. Check with the manufacturers. Update to the latest drivers. Sometimes you may need a BIOS update.

I like to wait at least a month [maybe 2] before attempting to install a service pack so known issues come up and hopefully there are fixes.

THere is really no major updates to SP1 for Windows 7. You can wait a bit. Microsoft will still support the RTM for another 2 years.

Regarding a genuine system becoming a trial version, try rebooting. I've heard about this issue already.

Those with third-party boot loaders [i.e. Linux boot menus and others] may have issues.

Those on a domain using RSAT, you can't install the current toold after SP1 is installed. Update available in a month or so.

Echo command broken
The "ECHO." command no longer works. All of my batch files now throw all kinds of "ECHO." is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file errors. How do we echo blank lines now???

Answer: AFAIK this is not a 7sp1 issue. Verify that you do not have a file named "echo" in the current directory. You can also use ECHO/ to echo an empty line. This works even if the current directory contains the "echo" file.

There is no "echo" file in the current directory. It seems that opening a normal command prompt (even under an Admin account) throws the error, but an elevated command prompt allows it to work. Thanks for the tip on "echo/", it works under both conditions.

Fatal error C0000034 on 64-bit Windows 7 laptops
About 80% of our win7-laptop users were rendered useless after releasing SP1 via WSUS. Only option to get them back running was to rename pending.xml and let the Service Pack fail and roll-back. Killed Internet
I just had to uninstall Win 7 SP1. After it installed (without a hitch) and the PC restarted, I had no Internet connectivity at all. Uninstalled the service pack and I am back online. Note: I also uninstalled a second Windows Update that was installed at the same time as SP1, but uninstalling that update had no effect - it appears that SP1 was the culprit - UNLESS installing these 2 updates at the same time caused the problem. Windows Update seemed to have no problem installing the 2 updates - no conflicts were indicated.

UPDATE - Just tried it again using several suggestions I've found on the web, and making sure to turn off anything unnecessary that runs in the background. Same problem - even though Windows says "You are already connected to the Internet" after I install SP1, I have no internet connection. I have uninstalled it again, and will wait to see if Microsoft addresses this issue. I don't have the time to keep trying this over and over.
Computer Applications and Windows Explorer (Not Responding) After SP1 Install
I installed SP 1 about 10 days ago (late FEB 2011) and have had numerous problems involving applications and Windows Explorer (Not Responding). When this happens I cannot close or restart the application. If two or more applications are involved, then I can't even get Task Manager to start. If I can get to the Task Manager screen with CTRL+ALT+DEL, I can usually get the computer to Shut Down or Restart. However, often attempting to start Task Manager only gives me a black screen and the waiting cursor circle.

I uninstalled all Hotfixes and SP1 and the computer ran OK for a time. Then Norton360 kicked in to do a background scan. Same scenario as above. I then uninstalled Norton.

Finally I Upgraded Windows 7, installed 75 updates and reinstalled Norton. The machine is now running better but it still hangs up from time to time. If it continues I will uninstall SP 1 and see if that eliminates the problem.

I viewed the Error Logs and saw that one problem I was having was with Homegroup searching. I left the Homegroup and that eliminated that problem.

Your Computer was unable to Start after installing Win 7SP1
Just finished installing Win 7 SP1 on my Dell Latitude D610. It appeared the update was going along smoothly until it came time to reboot. After rebooting, the laptop showed that it was configuring Windows. Once the configuration was completed the system went into Startup Repair. Once completed and checking the Repair Details it shows the number of root causes = 1. Scrolling further down I find a message indicating that ci.dll is corrupt. I replace the file in both the d:\windows\sytem32 and x:\windows\system 32 folders restarted the computer and it agin went right into Startup Repair and returned the following results...

Problem Event Startup Repair Offline
Signature Event 01: 6.1.7600.16385
Signature Event 02: 6.1.7600.16385
Signature Event 03: unknown
Signature Event 04: 21200712
Signature Event 05: AutoFailover
Signature Event 06: 6
Signature Event 07: CorruptFile
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 1033

I've run a chkdsk and found no problems. I tried system restore to a restore point taken just prior to the SP1 update and that wouldn't work. Last option is to restore from a System Image which I'm reluctant to do due to the problems with activating software that requires activation.

Anyone experience similar problems and found a solution?

- Jeff Skvorc - Reply -
I had the same issue. I installed two updates including this one. It took a very long time. The next day my computer was frozen. I went to reboot and it brought up the recovery window. I try restoring to each of the two restore points that were available. Both said they failed. I also tried a repair which failed. After repeating several times and several reboots, it finally booted back up with a message that the restore was successfull. Which one, I have no idea. I rebooted and it froze again while the Windows logo was swirling around. Second reboot and I was good. I tried one more soft reboot just to be sure and it worked. I am now going to try installing each update individually and see if that helps.

30 machines installed sp1 fine, 4 machines dead
30 machines installed Windows 7 Pro 32-bit sp1 fine, 4 machines were wont boot into windows. Those 4 machines are brand new (1 week old), and all 4 are identical Dell Optiplex 160 with Intel Atom cpu. System restore worked to get back into OS. Almost nothing running on these machines, as they are used for RDC only. SP1 appears to install fine, then restarts, and then all I get is solid black screen, no errors, no white mouse cursor.

Safe mode with or without networking does not work. I do see this message "failure configuring service pack, reverting changes, do not turn off your computer".

After system restore on each, I did this:

(1) chkdsk c: /f

(2) sfc /scannow

(3) Update Readiness Tool

(4) Control Panel > Troublshooting > System and Security > Windows Update >

(5) F12 at bios to get into Dell Diagnostics, ran all tests, takes 1 hour+

No issues found.

Changed power option to "high performance" on a lark.

Tried re-installing via windows update. Same result, OS is killed. Time for system restore again, yeah!

Then spent the last 3 hours on with Dell phone support and then dell chat support. I do really like Dell, the few times I needed support in past they have been great, this time around, an epic fail. Also, another user didnt care for my term "bricked" so I edited that out, but why quibble? Sp1 killed these machines, call it what you want, they are dead until I roll back AGAIN and start over. Also, these machines have no optical drive, so it's not really that easy just to wipe them, unless I go out and buy an external.

My original dock no longer works, that I lost ALL MY SETTINGS, and it became completely unrecoverable.

I tried to operate, but all it did was become stuck, I needed to un-install it.

After several attempts, I replaced it with another, and THAT ONE is now buggy. ~ when right clicking on the menu options, it gives me the warning, that the UI no longer is operable, and it fails.

I think this maybe the issue - however - I am unable to restore back to the previous settings (because) it was removed by SP1.

3. My Adobe Audio program is now silent, no longer works, however, the sound for the computer is working properly. ~ what gives?

4. I have tried to RESTORE back before the install, and like many here, it has erased all of the previous dates to be restored back to.

I did managed to get to a restore point, (after several reboots) to a previous date, but, now many items are now not working properly...

I will no longer update, it's a MAJOR PITA, and a un-necessary headache producer...maybe when it's actually fixed and verified that it will not effect ones programs, then I might re-consider installing it.

Granted, it may be an important SP to have and use, but I am avoiding it.

Disappointed...

No ethernet support for win 7 svc pack 1
It killed my internet. I kept getting a message that my cable was either broke or not plugged in. I uninstalled win 7 svc pack 1 and my ethernet cable was magically fixed and I was back online. I tried everything humanly possible to get it to work before uninstalling. I have no feedback for anything else in the service pack since the main use of my computer is online I didn't try anything else that this service pack had to offer. It's pretty useless to me untill this problem is fixed.

Only a few Issues after install
I installed SP1 on my Windows 7 Ultimate desktop PC and only had a few issues. After reboot it prompted me to go to safe mode, after installation was complete it stated my copy of Windows was not activated and it would not take my product key to reactivate. Kept telling me I was a victim of piracy. Rebooted PC like 10 times and still no luck. Guess I need to call Microsoft on this issue.

Did the same update to my laptop running ultimate, took a very long time to install, I started them both at the same time, but this install went with no hitches and everything seems to work fine.

So if you are thinking about updated, it is a 50-50 shot of working with no glitches. I hope this comment helps. I will also make an update after I call Microsoft with my activation issue.
SP1-Update run without trouble - and some trouble shooting tips
Here I was able to update my systems without any problem. Only long login procedure (as reported above) was observed.

after analyzing many requests in social answers and technet forums, I found are a couple of common things on systems causing trouble.

Some users has installed SP1 RC (without removing), using third party virus scanners or firewalls or using Tuning tools like TuneUp. Also corrupted system files are involved in this behavior.

If Windows 7 reports "Evaluation Copy" after SP1 install -> either parts of a previous installed "Beta/RC1" remainded - or the copy obtained from MS servers was still RC. Solution: Uninstall SP1 to revert back to RTM, download SP1 package again and try SP1 install again.

Error C0000034 and a "hanging system" after reboot is caused by missing/corrupted files. There has been some trouble shooting solutions developed in the net. Here are a few hints.

1: <mtps:InstrumentedLink NavigateUrl="http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-en/w7itproinstall/thread/1c9a7151-b48c-4a98-aae7-a4b82682ea8e" runat="server" xmlns:mtps="http://msdn2.microsoft.com/mtps">http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-en/w7itproinstall/thread/1c9a7151-b48c-4a98-aae7-a4b82682ea8e</mtps:InstrumentedLink>
2: <mtps:InstrumentedLink NavigateUrl="http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-en/w7itproinstall/thread/1c9a7151-b48c-4a98-aae7-a4b82682ea8e" runat="server" xmlns:mtps="http://msdn2.microsoft.com/mtps">http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-en/w7itproinstall/thread/1c9a7151-b48c-4a98-aae7-a4b82682ea8e</mtps:InstrumentedLink>
3: <mtps:InstrumentedLink NavigateUrl="http://blogs.technet.com/b/joscon/archive/2011/02/24/windows-7-service-pack-1-fails-to-install-with-0x800f0a13-or-0x800f0826.aspx" runat="server" xmlns:mtps="http://msdn2.microsoft.com/mtps">http://blogs.technet.com/b/joscon/archive/2011/02/24/windows-7-service-pack-1-fails-to-install-with-0x800f0a13-or-0x800f0826.aspx</mtps:InstrumentedLink>
4: <mtps:InstrumentedLink NavigateUrl="http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=de&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.borncity.com%2Fblog%2F2011%2F02%2F26%2Fsp1-installation-hngt-error-c0000034c000009a%2F" runat="server" xmlns:mtps="http://msdn2.microsoft.com/mtps">http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=de&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.borncity.com%2Fblog%2F2011%2F02%2F26%2Fsp1-installation-hngt-error-c0000034c000009a%2F</mtps:InstrumentedLink>

Media Player 12 still worse than MP11
The update reinstalled the Media Player, but the "Removed Features" found on the MP12 wikipedia page are still missing:

Enhancements are only accessible from Now Playing view in a floating window and cannot be docked.

Several player preferences are not saved and restored upon restarting the player. The playlist pane in Now Playing view is not shown automatically. Enhancements do not get restored when Windows Media Player is restarted. Even when manually restored, the previous position of the Now Playing window and enhancements is not retained.

If the ability to downgrade wasn't so disrupting to the OS this wouldn't be an issue.
