Adding Nodes to a Cluster

Updated: January 13, 2014

Applies To: Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 R2, Microsoft HPC Pack 2012, Microsoft HPC Pack 2012 R2, Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

Microsoft® HPC Pack simplifies the process of deploying nodes by providing automatic node imaging, automatic naming of nodes, and other capabilities to streamline deployment tasks. Also, it provides tools to monitor the progress of your deployment.

ImportantImportant
The default in HPC Pack is to respond only to Pre-boot Execution Environment (PXE) requests that come from existing nodes. This default setting is automatically changed when you use the Add Node Wizard to add nodes from bare metal. Also, you can manually change this setting at any time. For more information, see Set the Windows Deployment Services Mode.

ImportantImportant
Before you add nodes to your cluster, verify that the physical network topology of your cluster matches the topology specified on your head node. To see the network topology that is currently specified for your cluster, in Configuration, in the Navigation Pane, click Network.

ImportantImportant
If you are deploying nodes from bare metal, it is strongly recommended that you validate your environment first, to find common problems that can affect node deployment. For more information, see Validate your Environment Before Deploying Nodes.
