Modifying the Configuration of an iSCSI Target

Applies To: Microsoft iSCSI Software Target

After you create an iSCSI target in Microsoft iSCSI Software Target, you can change the identifiers for the iSCSI target. Additionally, you can configure the following properties of the target:

  • General

You can change the name of the iSCSI target and the description that you previously specified for the target. You can also change the iSCSI qualified name (IQN) of the target. The initial IQN is automatically assigned by iSCSI Software Target when the target is created. Because the IQN must be a worldwide unique identifier, you should not change it unless you know that the new IQN is unique.

  • iSCSI initiators

You can delete or edit each identifier for an iSCSI initiator that is assigned to an iSCSI target. You can also add an iSCSI initiator.

Note

You should only have one identifier per iSCSI initiator.

  • Authentication

You can enable Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) for authentication of iSCSI initiators to the iSCSI target, and enable reverse CHAP authentication for authentication of the iSCSI target to an iSCSI initiator.

  • Virtual disks

You can remove any virtual disk that is assigned to the iSCSI target. You can also add any virtual disk that was previously created by using iSCSI Software Target.

Note

To create a new virtual disk and assign it to an iSCSI target, use the Create Virtual Disk Wizard. For more information, see Creating and Managing Virtual Disks for iSCSI Targets.

  • Advanced

You can configure advanced settings that control transmissions between the iSCSI target and iSCSI initiator.

Warning

You should not modify these settings without a full understanding of the effect such changes may have on your iSCSI environment.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure. Review the details in "Additional considerations" in this topic.

Note

When you disable or modify a target, the effect may not be visible on the iSCSI initiator until you log off the iSCSI connection and then log on again.

To modify the configuration of an iSCSI target

  1. In Microsoft iSCSI Software Target, in the console tree, click iSCSI Targets.

  2. In the results pane, right-click the iSCSI target, and then click Properties.

  3. In the Properties dialog box, change the settings of the properties that you want to modify, and then click OK.

Additional considerations

  • You must be a member of the local Administrators group to perform these tasks.

  • To open iSCSI Software Target, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Microsoft iSCSI Software Target. (Another way to open iSCSI Software Target is to click Start, click Run, and then type iscsitarget.msc.)
