Defining Your Requirements for Group Chat Server

Topic Last Modified: 2011-02-01

Before you deploy Microsoft Lync Server 2010, Group Chat, you must determine the following for your organization:

  • Which sites and users in your organization require Microsoft Lync 2010 Group Chat support.

  • Whether to enable Lync 2010 Group Chat for internal communications (that is, chat rooms between internal users), external communications (that is, chat rooms that include at least one federated user outside your organization), or both.

  • How your Group Chat deployment affects the presence privacy mode. For details about Lync Server 2010 presence privacy policies, see Lync 2010 Group Chat and Privacy Mode in the Deployment documentation.

Additionally, you must determine the specific policies and other support options that you want to implement. Examples of policies include:

  • Enabling or disabling file transfers

  • Enabling or disabling instant messaging (IM)

  • Requiring a user to provide credentials (instead of enabling automatic log on)
