Reinstalling HPC Pack 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1

Updated: March 23, 2011

Applies To: Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

To reinstall Microsoft® HPC Pack 2008 R2 with Service Pack 1 (SP1) on the head node of your cluster without having all the data in the HPC databases erased, you must first create setup files for HPC Pack 2008 R2 with SP1. These files are also called slipstream setup files. Then, using these setup files, you must run setup.exe with the -keepdata parameter. Without this parameter, all the existing data in the HPC databases is erased during reinstallation, and all the cluster configuration information is lost.

Create HPC Pack 2008 R2 with SP1 setup files

Installation media for HPC Pack 2008 R2 with SP1 is not available from Microsoft. You can use the following procedure to create slipstream setup files for HPC Pack 2008 R2 with SP1 by using the installation media for the release to manufacturing (RTM) version of HPC Pack 2008 R2 and the installation files for SP1.

To create HPC Pack 2008 R2 with SP1 setup files

  1. On a computer that is different from your existing head node, install Windows Server 2008 R2 HPC Edition, or another edition of Windows Server 2008 R2.

  2. Run setup.exe from the installation media for the RTM version of HPC Pack 2008 R2, or from a network location that contains the RTM version of the HPC Pack 2008 R2 setup files.

  3. On the Getting Started page, click Next.

  4. On the Select Installation Edition page, select the edition of HPC Pack 2008 R2 that corresponds to the edition that is currently installed on the HPC Pack 2008 R2 SP1 head node, and then click Next.

  5. On the Microsoft Software License Terms page, read or print the software license terms in the license agreement, and accept or reject the terms of that agreement. If you accept the terms, click Next.

  6. On the Select Installation Type page, click Create a new HPC cluster by creating a head node, and then click Next.

  7. Continue to follow the steps in the installation wizard.

  8. Download and install SP1 for HPC Pack 2008 R2 on the computer. For more information, see Release Notes for Microsoft HPC Pack 2008 R2 Service Pack 1.

  9. Merge the setup files for the RTM version of HPC Pack 2008 R2 and the service pack in a folder on the computer, by doing the following:

    1. Create a folder on the computer with a name such as C:\HPC2008R2SP1.

    2. Copy the setup files from the installation media or shared folder for the RTM version of HPC Pack 2008 R2 to C:\HPC2008R2SP1.

    3. Copy all files under \\localhost\REMINST to C:\HPC2008R2SP1. Select to replace folders and files that have the same name.

The folder that you created in the last step contains the setup files for HPC Pack 2008 R2 with SP1.

Reinstall HPC Pack 2008 R2 with SP1 using the –keepdata parameter

The procedures to reinstall HPC Pack 2008 R2 with SP1 by running setup.exe with the -keepdata parameter are nearly identical to those to reinstall the RTM version of HPC Pack 2008 R2 with the -keepdata parameter. The only difference is that you use the slipstream setup files that you created in Create HPC Pack 2008 R2 with SP1 setup files. For detailed procedures to reinstall HPC Pack 2008 R2 using the –keepdata parameter, see Reinstalling the RTM Version of HPC Pack 2008 R2.

ImportantImportant
Ensure that you perform the reinstallation by using the setup files for HPC Pack 2008 R2 with SP1, not those for a different version of HPC Pack 2008 R2.
