Steps for Deploying Windows Azure Worker Nodes in Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

Updated: March 23, 2011

Applies To: Windows HPC Server 2008 R2

The following checklist describes the overall process for deploying Windows Azure worker nodes to a cluster running Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 SP1 or later. Each task in the checklist is linked to a section in this document that describes the steps to perform the task.

Task Description

Step 1: Configure the Management Certificate for Windows Azure

Configure the management certificate in your Windows Azure subscription and on the head node or client computer that you are using to manage the cluster.

Step 2: Create a Hosted Service and a Storage Account in Windows Azure

In the Windows Azure subscription, create a hosted service and a storage account that will be used to deploy the worker nodes.

Step 3: Advanced Firewall and Proxy Client Configuration (Optional)

If your enterprise network can block traffic between services for Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 SP1 and Windows Azure, you might need to configure a proxy client on the head node.

Step 4: Create a Windows Azure Worker Node Template

In HPC Cluster Manager, create a Windows Azure worker node template that specifies a connection to a Windows Azure subscription, information about how and when worker nodes will start and stop, and optional settings.

Step 5: Add Windows Azure Worker Nodes to the HPC Cluster

Run the Add Node Wizard to add worker nodes to the HPC cluster by using the worker node template.

Step 6: Start the Windows Azure Worker Nodes

To be available to run cluster jobs, the worker nodes that you added to the HPC cluster must be started and then brought online.
