Increase indexing capacity (FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint)

Applies to: FAST Search Server 2010

A default FAST Search Server 2010 for SharePoint configuration can index up to 15 million items per index column. Indexing more than 15 million items per column will adversely affect indexing and query performance.

In this section:

  • Add an index column.

You can scale out by adding an index column on a new set of servers.

  • Optimize for extended content capacity.

For scenarios with low content update rates and moderate query volume, you can configure the index to handle up to 40 million items per index column.

  • Remove an index column.

If you remove content sources from the index, you can remove an index column to save hardware cost.

Remove an index column

You remove an index column in the same way as you add an index column, but with the following modification to the steps in Add an index column:

  • Remove the host element in the deployment configuration file for each server in the index column you shall remove.

  • Remove and uninstall the indexer server(s).
