Reset the SharePoint Foundation 2010 passphrase

Published: December 23, 2010

Applies To: Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard

During server installation, Windows SBS 2011 Standard creates a random farm security passphrase to complete the setup of SharePoint Foundation 2010. The passphrase is required to connect a server to an existing farm. It is not possible to recover a passphrase that is unknown or forgotten. However, you can reset the passphrase.

If you use SharePoint Foundation 2010 on your Windows SBS 2011 Standard network, you should reset the passphrase so you can reconnect the server to the farm in case it becomes disconnected.

To reset the SharePoint Foundation 2010 passphrase

  1. Log on to Windows SBS 2011 Standard as a network administrator.

  2. Click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Products, and then click SharePoint 2010 Management Shell. The SharePoint 2010 Management Shell command window appears.

  3. At the command prompt, type the following:

    $passphrase = ConvertTo-SecureString -asPlainText -Force

  4. When you are prompted to supply a string value, type a new passphrase, and then press ENTER.

  5. At the prompt, type the following:

    Set-SPPassPhrase -PassPhrase $passphrase -Confirm

  6. Type the passphrase again to confirm, and then press ENTER

  7. To complete the action, press Y, and then press ENTER.

    Your passphrase is now reset.

Memorize the passphrase, or store the passphrase in a secure location.
