Add calculated metrics to a PerformancePoint KPI

After you have created a PerformancePoint KPI, you can use PerformancePoint Dashboard Designer to configure that KPI to show performance that is based on a calculation that uses a formula. For example, suppose that you want to configure a KPI that shows growth calculated as a percentage. You can do this by configuring the KPI to use calculated metrics.

You can use calculated metrics for a KPI’s Actual value, Target value, or both. In addition, calculated metrics can use data from the same or different data sources.

Configuring KPIs to use calculated metrics

When you extend a KPI by adding calculated metrics to that KPI, you begin by opening an existing KPI for editing. Then, you use the Editor tab in the center pane of Dashboard Designer to additionally configure that KPI. Before you perform the procedures in this article, make sure that you have an existing KPI to configure. To create a KPI, see Create and configure a KPI by using Dashboard Designer.

Open a KPI for editing

To open a KPI for editing

  1. In Dashboard Designer, locate the Workspace Browser on the left side of the window, and then click PerformancePoint Content. The center pane displays two tabs: SharePoint and Workspace.

  2. Using the SharePoint and Workspace tabs, locate a KPI that you want to configure.

  3. Double-click the KPI that you want to configure to open it for editing.

Configure a KPI to use calculated metrics

When you add calculated metrics to a KPI, you configure the data mappings for an Actual or Target value in a KPI. You configure the data mappings for each Actual or Target value separately.

To configure a KPI to use calculated metrics

  1. In the center pane, on the Editor tab, locate the Actual or Target value for which you want to use a calculated metric.

  2. In the Data Mappings column, click the hypertext. A Data Source Mapping dialog box opens.

    Depending on how the KPI was created, the Data Source Mapping dialog box will be one of the following:

    • Fixed Values Data Source Mapping dialog box.

    • Dimensional Data Source Mapping dialog box

    • Calculated Metrics Data Source Mapping dialog box

    Click Change Source to open the Select a Data Source dialog box.

  3. In the Select a Data Source dialog box, click the Calculated Metric tab.

  4. Select a formula, and then click OK.

    The Calculated Metrics Data Source Mapping dialog box opens.

  5. In the Calculated Metrics Data Source Mapping dialog box, notice the list of values and their corresponding sources. Also notice the formula that is displayed in the Formula pane.

  6. To configure the list of values or the formula, do one of the following:

    • To add a value to the list, click New Mapping.

    • To remove a value from the list, click its row, and then click Delete.

    • To use a different formula, click Change Source, and then use the Calculated Metric tab to select a formula template. Or, delete the existing formula and type your own formula.

  7. By default, each value has a name that resembles Value1, Value2, and so on. You can either keep these names, or change them to more meaningful names.

    To change the name of a value, in the Name column, click to select the text, and then type a new name.

  8. Each value that you use in the formula must be mapped to a data source. By default, each value is set to 1(Fixed Values). To configure a value, follow these steps:

    To map a value to a data source

    1. Click the hypertext in the Source column to open the Fixed Values Data Source Mapping dialog box.

    2. Do one of the following:

      • Specify a fixed value. In the Value box, type a numeric value to use in the formula. Then proceed to Step 9.

      • Specify a value from a database. To do this, take the following steps:

        1. Click Change Source to open the Select a Data Source dialog box.

        2. Use the SharePoint Site or Workspace tabs to select a data source. The Dimensional Data Source Mapping dialog box opens.

        3. In the Dimensional Data Source Mapping dialog box, use the Select a measure list to select an item, and then click OK.

  9. Repeat Steps 7-8 until you have finished configuring the calculated metric for the KPI. Then, click OK to close the Calculated Metrics Data Source Mapping dialog box.

  10. In the Workspace Browser, right-click the KPI, and then click Save.
