Use Project Server with PerformancePoint Services (SharePoint Server 2010)

The scenarios in this section use PerformancePoint Services in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 together with Microsoft Project Server 2010. Project Server 2010 does not require PerformancePoint Services for a default deployment. If you have not configured PerformancePoint Services on your farm, you must do so before you implement the scenarios in this section.

If you are deploying PerformancePoint Services in a test environment or if you want to be up and running quickly, this article contains basic procedures for configuring PerformancePoint Services for use with the scenarios in this section.

Important Important:

The procedures in this article assume that you have already configured reporting for Project Server 2010 as described in Configure reporting for Project Server 2010.

Configure PerformancePoint Services

To configure PerformancePoint Services, you must first start the PerformancePoint Service on the application server where you want to run PerformancePoint Services. You can start the service on multiple application servers for better performance, if you want. However, the service must be started on at least one server. Use the following procedure to start the PerformancePoint Service.

To start the PerformancePoint Service

  1. In the SharePoint Server Central Administration Web site, in the System Settings section, click Manage services on server.

  2. Click Start next to PerformancePoint Service.

Once the service is started, you can create a PerformancePoint Services service application. Use the following procedure to create the service application.

To create a PerformancePoint Services service application

  1. In SharePoint Server Central Administration, in the Application Management section, click Manage Service Applications.

  2. Click New, and then click PerformancePoint Service Application.

  3. Type a name for the service application and select the Add this service application's proxy to the farm's default proxy list check box.

  4. Select the Create new application pool option and type a name for the application pool.

  5. Under the Configurable option, select the managed account to run the application pool.

  6. Click Create.

  7. Click OK.

By default, when you create the service application the application proxy is not associated with the default web application. For PerformancePoint Services to function, you must create this association. Use the following procedure to configure the association between the web application and the PerformancePoint Services proxy.

To configure service application associations

  1. In SharePoint Server Central Administration, click Application Management.

  2. In the Service Applications section, click Configure service application associations.

  3. In the Application Proxy Group section, click default.

  4. Ensure that the PerformancePoint Services check box is selected, and then click OK.

Unless you have Kerberos delegation configured, you must have an Unattended Service Account for PerformancePoint Services in order to connect to external data sources. This account is an Active Directory account that you create that is used for data access. After you create the Active Directory account, follow these steps to configure the Unattended Service Account in PerformancePoint Services.

To configure the PerformancePoint Services Unattended Service Account

  1. In SharePoint Server Central Administration, in the Application Management section, click Manage Service Applications.

  2. Click the PerformancePoint Services service application.

  3. Click PerformancePoint Service Application Settings.

  4. In the Secure Store and Unattended Service Account section, type the user name and password of the account that you want to use as the Unattended Service Account.

  5. Click OK.

For scenarios which use the Project Server Business Intelligence Center, the Unattended Service Account must have read access to the Business Intelligence Center in order to access data connection files and Microsoft Excel 2010 workbooks. Use the following procedure to grant Business Intelligence Center access to the PerformancePoint Services Unattended Service Account.

To grant access to the unattended service account

  1. In Microsoft Project Web App (PWA), in the Quick Launch, click Business Intelligence.

  2. In the Business Intelligence Center, click Site Actions, and then click Site Permissions.

  3. On the Edit tab, click Create Group.

  4. On the Create Group page:

    1. In the Name box, type the name that you want to use for the group (for example, BI Center Read Access).

    2. In the Give Group Permissions to this Site area, select the Read check box.

    3. Leave the other options at their default values and then click Create.

  5. On the People and Groups page, click New.

  6. In the Grant Permissions dialog box, type the name of the Active Directory account that is used by PerformancePoint Services as the Unattended Service Account, and then click OK.
