Verify your router setup

If your router supports the UPnP™ framework, and it is set up properly, Windows SBS 2011 Standard can do the following:

  • Configure the Internet connection for Windows SBS 2011 Standard during installation.

  • Configure port forwarding exceptions on the router during installation.

  • After the installation finishes, the Windows SBS Console collects and displays information about your router. To see this information, click Network, click the Connectivity tab, click Internet connection, and then click View Internet connection properties.

To take advantage of this capability, verify the following:

  1. The UPnP framework is enabled on your router.

  2. The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server service for the LAN can be enabled or disabled. Windows SBS 2011 Standard ensures that DHCP is not running on both the server and the router— when DHCP is enabled on the router, DHCP is not enabled on the server during installation. When you run the Connect to the Internet Wizard after the installation is finished, DHCP is disabled on the router, and it is enabled on the server .

  3. The IP address for the internal network adapter on your router is set to 192.168.x.1, where x is 0-254.

  4. You have an IP address for the external interface of your router, which is supplied by your Internet service provider (ISP). The IP address can be dynamically assigned by the DHCP Server service at your ISP, or you must manually configure a static IP address by using the router management console.

  5. If your Internet connection requires a user name and password, also called Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), these settings are configured on your router, even if the device supports the UPnP framework.

  6. The router is connected to the LAN and the Internet, it is turned on, and it is functioning properly.

If your router does not support the UPnP framework, or if your router cannot be configured during installation, you must manually configure it with the settings for your network. Ensure that the following ports are open and are directed to the IP address of the Destination Server:

  • Port 25: SMTP e-mail

  • Port 80: HTTP Web traffic

  • Port 443: HTTPS Web traffic

  • Port 987: HTTPS Web traffic for Windows SharePoint Foundation 2010 through Remote Web Access

  • Port 1723: VPN if you plan to enable VPN on the Destination Server. You may also need to enable the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) pass-through on your router.
