Understanding Management Pack Operations

Windows Server DNS operations are divided into two areas:

  • Discovery

    • Several Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) scripts discover which DNS services and features are running and create the necessary objects in the Operations Manager database. Customization is provided through the use of discovery rule overrides.
  • Monitoring

    • Unit monitors, event monitors, and performance monitors continuously monitor all objects discovered for health, performance and configuration-related issues. Unit monitors rollup in state views to produce near real-time health state views that the user can use to determine the current health of all DNS services.

Events views provide a historical view of health in situations where historical context provides insight into DNS-related problems or when the user wants to see health over a certain time period.
