Audience: IT Professionals

If you encounter an activation or subscription error in Office 365 ProPlus, you can check the suggestions in this article to troubleshoot the issue. To troubleshoot a specific error message that is displayed to a user, see Troubleshoot specific errors in Office 365 ProPlus.

In this article:

Check the user’s status

To evaluate the user's status, look at the license that is assigned to the user's account, determine which version of Office is installed, and verify the activation and license status of Office 365 ProPlus.

note Note:

You can complete tasks in all Office 2013 suites by using a mouse, keyboard shortcuts, or touch. For information about how to use keyboard shortcuts and touch with Office products and services, see Keyboard shortcuts and Office Touch Guide.

Check the license provisioning

In Office 365, the software licenses are assigned to user accounts. So, if a user encounters an activation or subscription error in Office 365 ProPlus, you should verify that the user has an Office 365 account and is assigned to a license for Office Professional Plus. To do this, see Create or edit users.

Determine which version of Office is installed

Office 365 ProPlus can't be used on the same computer as a volume licensed version of Office 2013. To verify that the user has Office 365 ProPlus installed, open an Office application, choose File and then choose Account. Under Product Information, you should see “Subscription Product.” If the version information doesn't contain “Subscription,” you must uninstall that version of Office and install Office 365 ProPlus.

Check the activation status

If Office isn't activated, you will be notified in one of the following three ways:

  • When you start Office 365 ProPlus, a message says that the product is deactivated. If you choose Sign In, Office 365 ProPlus will be activated.

Shows Office deactivated and how to reactivate.

  • When you run an Office 365 ProPlus application, a red bar under the Ribbon says that the product is deactivated. Choose Reactivate to activate Office.

Shows Office app deactivated and to reactivate
  • If you open an Office 365 ProPlus application, choose File, and then choose Account, a message under Product Information says Product Deactivated. If you choose Manage Account, you are directed to your My Account page where you can manage your Office installations.

Backstage account info shows product deactivated
note Note:

If Office 365 ProPlus is already running when activation occurs, the Backstage view may not reflect the licensed status. To see the updated license status in the Backstage view, close and restart the Office 365 ProPlus application.

To check the activation status of Office 365 ProPlus

  1. Open an Office application.

  2. Choose File to reach the Backstage view.

  3. Choose Account.

If Office 365 ProPlus can't validate the user:

    1. Retrieve a product key.

    2. Install the key.

    3. Activate Office with that key.

If "Product Activated" appears on the page, the Office Subscription license is successfully activated.

Note that if Office 365 ProPlus is already running when activation occurs, the Backstage view may not accurately reflect the licensed status. Close and restart the Office application. Then check license status in the Backstage view to see if it has been updated.

Check the license status

During installation, Office installs a script named ospp.vbs. This script displays the licenses that are available to Office products on that computer.

To run the ospp.vbs script:

  1. Determine whether the computer has the 64-bit or 32-bit version of Office installed. To do this, open an Office 2013 application, choose File, choose Account, and then choose About. The bitness is displayed next to the application version.

  2. Depending on the version of Office, open a command prompt and then type one of the following commands:

    • On 64-bit Windows with 32-bit Office:

      cscript.exe "%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Microsoft Office\Office15\"ospp.vbs /dstatus

    • On 32-bit Windows, or 64-bit Office with 64-bit Windows:

      cscript.exe "%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office15\"ospp.vbs /dstatus

  3. Review the LICENSE STATUS. LICENSE STATUS indicates the life-cycle status of the Office Subscription.

The following table lists the various license status types and describes each.

License status types

License status Description

OOB_GRACE

Office 365 ProPlus was installed within the last 10 days but not yet activated. Office is fully functional. However, Office will prompt the user to enter user ID credentials to provision Office.

If users are still in this license status after they have entered credentials and waited enough time for activation to occur in the background, verify their Internet connectivity.

LICENSED

Office is in full-functionality mode and activated.

EXTENDED_GRACE

Office is in full-functionality mode but is at risk of going into reduced functionality mode. This status lasts for 30 days and indicates that the product key wasn't successfully re-activated. Possible causes:

  • The client computer was deactivated from the My Account page.

  • The computer wasn't connected to the Internet for some time. This would prevent the Office services from validating the license.

NOTIFICATIONS

The user is in reduced functionality mode.

Check server connectivity and Office 365 components

If you receive an error message that states that an Internet connection is required, verify the following:

  • Office 365 ProPlus has Internet connectivity.

  • Office 365 components are working.

Verify server connectivity

Office 365 ProPlus requires Internet connectivity to the Office Subscription Service (OSS) to keep Office activated and fully functional. To verify the user’s ability to connect, ask the user open a web browser and try to access the following URL.

https://ols.officeapps.live.com/olsc/OlsClient.svc

If the user receives an error, check for firewall blocking, proxy access issues, conflicting policies or local configurations that would prevent the Office services from connecting to the Internet. Verify that no firewalls are blocking ports 443 and 80 and that the network administrator allows HTTPS traffic over TCP on port 443. Note that, in some configurations, a firewall could allow access to this page through the web browser and still block the Office services from connecting to the Internet. If the Office services can't connect to the Internet, you see an Internet Connection Required dialog box.

If you can open the link, but you still see an “Internet connection required” error message when you start Office 365 ProPlus, check the proxy settings. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open an Internet Explorer browser window.

  2. From the menu bar, select Tools, and then choose Internet Options. The Internet Options window opens.

  3. Choose the Connections tab and the LAN settings button.

  4. Verify that the Automatically detect settings check box is selected.

  5. If your organization requires Internet connectivity through a specific proxy server and Automatically detect settings is unchecked, you must enable Office 365 services to connect to the Internet through that server. To do this, use the Bitsadmin command-line tool and run the following command.

    bitsadmin /util /setieproxy networkservice MANUAL_PROXY proxyserver:port

For more information, see BITSAdmin Tool.

Ensure that updates are enabled and installed

Ensure that updates are enabled and installed by performing the following:

To ensure that updates are enabled and installed

  1. Open an Office application.

  2. Choose File.

  3. Choose Account.

Under Office Updates “Updates are automatically downloaded and installed” should be displayed. If, instead, “This product will not be updated” is displayed, choose Update Options and then choose Enable Updates.

Reset user’s installation

If you receive a subscription error message, you may have to reset a user's licensing status after verifying the user's status. If that doesn't resolve the issue, you may have to repair the Office 365 ProPlus installation and services.
