Server Installation Requirements

This section provides information about the requirements for installing Device Manager 2011 server. The server installer determines whether a system can host Device Manager 2011 server according to its Configuration Manager role, such as primary site server, provider role, or management point.

The following table shows the system requirements for installing Device Manager 2011 server.

Component Requirement

Hardware

733 MHz Pentium III processor, minimum required (2.0 GHz or faster recommended).

256 MB of RAM minimum required (1024 MB or more recommended).

5 GB of available hard disk space minimum (15 GB or more recommended if you are using operating system deployment).

Site system computers must have network connectivity to other Configuration Manager site systems.

Software

Configuration Manager 2007 with Service Pack 2 (SP2), Configuration Manager 2007 R2 with SP2, or later versions of Configuration Manager 2007. (Configuration Manager 2007 R2 with SP2 or later versions of Configuration Manager 2007 is recommended.)

The Windows Server 2003 with SP2, Windows Server 2008 with SP2, or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 operating system.

Download and install Windows Installer 4.5 before you install Device Manager 2011 server on a computer running Windows Server 2003 with SP2.

Additional

Internet Information Services (IIS) and the .NET Framework 3.51 with SP1 must be installed on the computer that has Device Manager 2011 Server Core Components installed.

The user account that is used for installation must be a member of the Configuration Manager Administrator group on the computer that has Device Manager 2011 server installed. This account must also be a domain account and have Administrator class permissions for all security rights on the site server.

The user account that is used for installation must have access to the log on as a service command. For information about how to manually grant user rights for a service account, see Grant User Rights to a Service Account.

The user account that is used as the logon account for Device Manager 2011 must be a domain user with local administrator privileges on the site server.

Device Manager 2011 supports the same level of site server capacity as Configuration Manager. For more information on site server capacity, see Configuration Manager Site Capacity Planning.

The Device Manager 2011 server installer retrieves the following information from Configuration Manager:

  • SQL database information:
    • SQL database computer name
    • SQL server instance
    • Database name
  • Site server information:
    • Site server name
    • Primary or secondary site server
    • Site server code
    • Site server computer name

The Device Manager 2011 server installer also provides status and error messages if any errors occur during installation.
