The Volume Shadow Copy Service is not configured

Applies To: Windows Small Business Server 2011 Standard

Problem   The Volume Shadow Copy Service is not configured.

Features affected   Users cannot view or restore previous versions of files or folders with Windows Explorer. For users whose folders are redirected to the server, they cannot view or restore files and folders in their Documents or Desktop folders.

Solution   To resolve this issue, you must manually configure the Volume Shadow Copy Service.

Note

You must log on as a domain administrator to complete this procedure.

To manually configure the Volume Shadow Copy Service

  1. Right-click Start, and then click Explore.

  2. Right-click any available volume (for example, C:\), and then click Configure Shadow Copies.

  3. In the User Account Control window, click Continue.

  4. In the Shadow Copies dialog box, for every volume listed in the list view, click the volume, and then click the Enable button. In the Enable Shadow Copies window, click Yes. This enables shadow copies with the default settings.

  5. It is recommended that you keep the default settings that are configured during Setup. However, you can customize the Volume Shadow Copy Service if you need to. To customize it, click Settings, and then modify the following:

    • The size limit, in MBs, for shadow copies.

    • The schedule when shadow copies are created.

  6. Click OK to close the Settings window, and then click OK to close the Shadow Copies window.
