Device Manager 2011 Glossary

advertisement

A Configuration Manager object that the site server sends as a notification to the management points, specifying that a program, software update deployment, or task sequence is available for clients.

client installer

An application that installs Device Manager 2011 client software on a device.

collection

A set of resources in the Configuration Manager hierarchy.

collection definition

A query that is used to determine which devices belong in a collection.

collection update

A process that runs after the inventory update cycle and that updates collection membership by adding devices to a collection according to the collection definition.

configuration

A process that deploys and configures initial device settings or updates existing access and security settings on devices.

configuration item

A device setting that the administrator can specify to be changed during configuration.

Configuration Manager Administrator console

The primary interface that you use to administer Configuration Manager.

Configuration Manager console

The primary interface that you use to administer Configuration Manager.

Configuration Manager Console Add-in

The software that integrates Device Manager 2011 server UI into the Configuration Manager console. One of three components that a user can install using the Device Manager 2011 server installer.

Configuration Manager site database

A Microsoft SQL Server database that stores Configuration Manager site data, such as discovery data, configuration data, and status messages and inventory data. Every primary site has a Configuration Manager site database. The server supporting the Configuration Manager site database is automatically assigned the site database server role.

Configuration Manager software inventory

A feature of Configuration Manager that automatically collects information about software that is installed on devices.

configuration package

A set of configuration items defined by the administrator and used to update a collection of devices.

Configuration Package Wizard

A wizard that administrators use to select the configuration items to include in a configuration package.

Console Add-in

The software that integrates Device Manager 2011 server UI into the Configuration Manager console. One of three components that a user can install using the Device Manager 2011 server installer.

device collection

A predefined or dynamic collection that is created and managed by Device Manager 2011.

device imaging

The process of deploying the image of an operating system and installing it on a device. The image contains the operating system and related files. The image can also contain applications and tools.

device imaging component

Software that implements a COM or DCOM interface to the Device Manager 2011 Device Imaging service, and that handles communication between the Device Imaging service and the device imaging solution. Created by a device manufacturer to integrate a device imaging solution with Device Manager 2011.

device imaging deployment

A Device Manager 2011 object that consists of a reference to a device imaging component, a string that selects an image file, a collection of devices targeted for imaging, and any schedule settings that determine when the device imaging request will start.

device imaging process

The process of deploying the image of an operating system and installing it on a device. The image contains the operating system and related files. The image can also contain applications and tools.

device imaging request

A call from the Device Imaging service to a device imaging component that is initiated when the device imaging deployment starts.

Device Imaging service

The Device Manager 2011 service that manages communication between the device imaging interface component and Device Manager 2011.

device imaging solution

A software solution created by a device manufacturer or other third party to manage the deployment of operating system images onto devices.

device imaging task

A step in a device imaging process.

Device Manager 2011 client

The Device Manager 2011 client software that is installed on a device.

Device Manager 2011 client installer

An application that installs Device Manager 2011 client software on a device.

Device Manager 2011 server

The Device Manager 2011 server software that is installed on a server.

Device Manager 2011 server installer

An application that installs Device Manager 2011 server software on a server.

digital signage device

An electronic display device designed to display informational multimedia and advertising in a business or public place.

dynamic collection

A collection that is generated during a collection update and that groups devices based on manufacturer name, model number, and device type information stored in registry keys.

handheld device

A piece of handheld equipment such as a portable music or video player, PDA (personal digital assistant), mobile phone, or Windows Mobile device that works on its own but can also connect to a computer. Many of these devices can sync information with Windows.

hardware inventory

An automatic inventory process in Configuration Manager that gathers detailed information about client hardware and software and provides regularly updated reports.

Hardware Inventory Client Agent

A component of the SMS/Configuration Manager hardware inventory feature. It is a program running on an SMS/Configuration Manager client that gathers detailed information about the hardware in use on the client.

image

A collection of files and folders (sometimes compressed into one file) that duplicates the original file and folder structure of an operating system. It often contains other files added by the OEM or corporation.

Image Deployment Manager

A feature of Device Manager 2011 that handles the interactions between Configuration Manager and the imaging solution.

imaging solution

A software solution created by a device manufacturer or other third party to manage the deployment of operating system images onto devices.

imaging task

A step in a device imaging process.

initial configuration

A state of the device before it is configured.

Microsoft Management Console

A Microsoft management display framework that provides a unified view for administering multiple integrated network applications.

Microsoft Windows Installer

A feature of Windows that defines and manages a standard format for application setup and installation, and tracks components such as groups of files, registry entries, and shortcuts.

MMC

A Microsoft management display framework that provides a unified view for administering multiple integrated network applications.

MOF file

A text file that contains definitions of classes and instances using the Managed Object Format language.

.mof file

A text file that contains definitions of classes and instances using the Managed Object Format language.

New Image Deployment Wizard

A wizard that is used to deploy new images to devices managed by Device Manager 2011.

package

An object that contains the files and instructions for distributing software to a distribution point.

point of service device

A device that is installed at a point of service, to help with shopping or informational services.

POS device

A device that is installed at a point of service, to help with shopping or informational services.

predefined collection

A collection that is installed with Device Manager 2011, and that groups devices based on device type.

Resource Explorer

An SMS/Configuration Manager Administrator console feature that displays the hardware and software inventory that has been collected from clients.

Server Core Components

The software that provides core Device Manager 2011 server functionality, including support for configuration and inventory. One of three components that a user can install using the Device Manager 2011 server installer.

server installer

An application that installs Device Manager 2011 server software on a server.

Software Inventory

A feature of Configuration Manager that automatically collects information about software that is installed on devices.

specialized device

A thin client, POS, digital signage, or kiosk device that runs a Windows Embedded operating system.

subcollection

A collection that is associated with another collection for the purpose of software distribution.

target collection

A collection of devices identified by type, attributes, or configuration that are to be managed as a group using the Configuration Manager console.

target device

A device selected to receive software updates or configuration changes.

task sequence

The mechanism in Configuration Manager for performing multiple steps or tasks on a client computer at the command-line level without requiring user intervention.

task sequence package

A package that contains multiple, sequential actions.

thin client

In a client/server architecture, a network device that has the ability to process information independently but relies on servers for applications, data storage, and administration.

thin client device

Windows Installer

A feature of Windows that defines and manages a standard format for application setup and installation, and tracks components such as groups of files, registry entries, and shortcuts.
