Viewing reports and scorecards on Apple iPad devices (SharePoint Server 2010)

SharePoint 2010

Updated: March 13, 2012

Cumulative Update 2011-12 (CU 2011-12) for Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 enables organizations to view certain kinds of reports and scorecards on Apple iPad devices that use the iOS 5 Safari browser. This article describes what business intelligence content users can view on iPad, how to navigate business intelligence content on iPad, and how to configure reports and scorecards to be displayed correctly.

ImportantImportant:

In order to display business intelligence content on iPad devices, you must install CU 2011-12 on the SharePoint Server computer(s) where the content resides. For more information, see Description of the SharePoint Server 2010 cumulative update package (SharePoint server-package): December 13, 2011 (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=237662).

In addition, iPad users must be able to connect to SharePoint Server, and iPad devices must be running the iOS 5 Safari browser.

Not all reports and scorecards will appear correctly on iPad devices. Limited testing was performed to support displaying dashboard content on iPad devices, and SharePoint Server 2010 is not fully supported for viewing on Apple iPad devices.

Viewing business intelligence content on iPad

Business intelligence content that you can display on iPad includes reports, scorecards, and dashboards that are published to SharePoint Server 2010. To view and navigate business intelligence content, follow these steps.

To view and navigate business intelligence content on iPad

  1. Make sure that you are connected to the intranet where the business intelligence content resides. You must either connect to your corporate network or have your firewall configured to enable a connection. For more information, see Plan for mobile devices (SharePoint Server 2010).

  2. On your iPad device, open the Safari browser.

  3. Navigate to the SharePoint location where the business intelligence content resides.

    • To open a SharePoint list or document library that is listed in the Quick Launch, tap the name. For example, if you want to view dashboards, in the Quick Launch, tap Dashboards.

    • To open a folder in a library, tap and hold the name of the folder for 1-2 seconds, and then tap Open (or Open in New Tab) in the menu that appears.

    • To open an item, such as a dashboard or a report, tap and hold the name of the item for 1-2 seconds, and then tap Open (or Open in New Tab) to display it in the browser window.

  4. When you have a dashboard page or a report open for viewing, you can navigate the content by taking the following actions:

    • To pan across a page, use two fingers to tap, hold, and move through the page.

    • To zoom out, stretch an item by separating two fingers while touching the item.

    • To zoom in, pinch an item by moving two fingers together while touching the item.

    • To expand a row or a column in a report or a scorecard, tap its plus (+) sign.

    • To collapse a row or a column in a report or a scorecard, tap its minus (-) sign.

    • To apply a dashboard filter, tap it to open it, and then tap the item(s) that you want to use as a filter. Some filters use controls that enable you to select only one item, whereas other filters use controls that enable you to select multiple items.

  5. Each report has a Web Part menu that contains certain commands, such as Reset View or Open in New Window. You can open and use the Web Part menu by taking the following actions:

    1. Tap the report or scorecard for which you want to open the Web Part menu, and notice the little down arrow that appears.

    2. Tap the down arrow to display the Web Part menu.

    3. On the Web Part command that you want to use, tap and hold for 1-2 seconds.

Kinds of reports and scorecards that can be viewed on Apple iPad

CU 2011-12 makes it possible for iPad users to view certain kinds of reports and scorecards. For example, users can view PerformancePoint scorecards, analytic charts and grids, and Excel Services reports by using the Safari browser on iPad. However, not all kinds of reports can be viewed on iPad. For example, users will be unable to view Visio Services reports or PerformancePoint strategy maps because of client-side requirements that iPad devices cannot support. The following table summarizes which kinds of dashboard items can be displayed on iPad.

Working with filters and menu options on iPad

In general, you can create reports and scorecards for viewing on iPad by using the same processes that you use to publish your business intelligence content to SharePoint Server. Business intelligence content that you view on iPad maintains a similar appearance and behavior to what you might see in a browser window on a computer. However, there are certain points of consideration to remember when you configure reports and scorecards for viewing on iPad devices. The following table summarizes these items:

Item Description

Depending on how much content is displayed in a dashboard page, reports, scorecards, and dashboards might look very small on iPad. This can make it difficult for users to view the content.

When you create reports, scorecards, and dashboards that will be displayed on iPad devices, make sure that you do not display too many items on a single page. For example, consider creating scorecards that do not contain lots of rows and columns. And consider creating dashboards that contain no more than four reports on a single page.

Although iPad users can zoom in and out on the screen, we recommend that you configure business intelligence content to display comfortably on smaller screens. Consider creating multiple pages and reports instead of trying to fit everything on a single page.

Font settings for items such as scorecards and reports might not display on iPad as they do on other computers. For example, not all typefaces that are available on Windows-based computers are available for iPad.

The Safari browser on iPad supports only Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) fonts. If you use fonts in reports and scorecards that are not supported by the Safari browser on iPad, those items will display on iPad in the Times New Roman font.

When you create reports and scorecards, make sure that you specify font settings that will display correctly on iPad. Some examples of fonts that you can use include ArialMT and Verdana.

Users might not know how to open some kinds of hyperlinks and context menus as they do when they view business intelligence content on a Windows-based computer.

Apple iPad does not use right-click functionality or the ability to double-click a SharePoint folder to open it. However, this does not mean that context menus are unavailable. To open a SharePoint folder or a shortcut menu or a hyperlink in Safari on iPad, tap and hold a position for approximately 1-2 seconds. A context menu opens from which you can select the option that you want.

When users attempt to select a single cell or a key performance indicator (KPI) in a scorecard on iPad, it is displayed as if the whole scorecard was selected.

Users can tap a single cell or a KPI in a scorecard to view additional information in KPI Details reports or other reports that might be connected to the scorecard. Even though it might seem as if the whole scorecard was selected, in fact, only the cell or KPI that a user has tapped is selected. Any reports that are connected to the scorecard are displayed as expected.

Some kinds of slicers might not work as expected on Excel Services reports displayed on iPad. In particular, users can apply single-item slicers but not slicers that include multiple selections.

To supplement or replace slicers, consider using dashboard filters, such as those that you can create by using Dashboard Designer. For more information, see Connect a filter to a report or a scorecard by using Dashboard Designer.

Users might be unable to use the Export to PowerPoint or Export to Excel commands in the Web Part menu for certain items.

Some kinds of reports and scorecards can be exported if the necessary software is installed on the iPad device.

  • To use the Export to PowerPoint command, make sure that you have installed an application such as Keynote for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the iPad device.

  • To use the Export to Excel command, make sure that you have installed an application such as Numbers for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch on the iPad device.
