Recover Exchange Server 2010 Data

Updated: May 13, 2016

Applies To: System Center 2012 SP1 - Data Protection Manager, System Center 2012 - Data Protection Manager, System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager

You can use System Center 2012 – Data Protection Manager (DPM) to recover a single mailbox database or a single mailbox.

Depending on the type of information you can recover to:

  • The original location

  • To a recovery database.

  • To a network folder.

  • To a tape drive.

You can recover from the recovery points that have been created, or from the “latest” which results in near data loss. If a complete data loss occurs in database file, selecting to recover “latest” restores to the last recovery point and rolls forward beyond that point any surviving transaction logs, as long as Exchange databases and logs are stored on separate volumes. Note that when you recover Exchange databases and the recovery point is incremental, DPM also recovers the Exchange log files.

Recovering a mailbox database

  1. In the Recovery area of the DPM Administrator console, locate the mailbox database you want to recover in All Protected Exchange Data. Select a recovery point from the calendar, and then click Recover on the toolbar.

  2. In the Recovery Wizard > Review recovery selection verify what you want to recover. Note that if the user of the mailbox you’re trying to recover has an active mailbox you can only recover a previous version.

  3. In Select recovery type choose where to want to recover the data. Note the following:

    • The option to Recover the database to its original location is only available if the latest available recovery point is selected

    • If you select Recover the database to its original location or Recover to another database on an Exchange Server recovery overwrites any existing copies of the database.

    • DPM doesn’t support recovering mailbox databases to passive databases. If you want to recover to the original location or to an alternate database, the target database on which the recovery is being performed shouldn’t be passive.

    • If you select Copy to a network folder the DPM protection agent and Eseutil utility must be installed on the destination server.

    • If you select Copy to tape you’ll select library details and tape options, and compress or encrypt data.

  4. On the Specify recovery options select Mount the databases after they are recovered, and Send an e-mail when this recovery completes if you want to send a notification. Review the settings and click Recover. Any synchronization job for the recovered item will be canceled while recovery is in progress.

On the Exchange server you’ll need to allow the databases to be overwritten by the restore process. For the relevant Exchange mailbox database in maintenance settings verify that This database can be overwritten by a restore is selected.

Changing the status of a database from active to passive or vice versa may affect the recovery process. If the database is passive, DPM cannot perform a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) recovery. Recovering a passive database to an active database requires the Exchange administrator to synchronize the passive copy from the recovered active copy by clicking Resume in the Databases tab, or by running the Resume-MailboxDatabaseCopy cmdlet on the Exchange server.
