Plan for Exchange Online in Office 365

Applies to: Office 365 Enterprise

Topic Last Modified: 2013-09-26

Summary: Briefly describes prerequisite tasks and the timeframe for Exchange Online deployments.

This section of the deployment guide describes the tasks and processes associated with moving from your existing messaging system to Exchange Online. It assumes that you have implemented the Active Directory service on-premises and have created and maintain mail-enabled user accounts.

In your planning, it is also important to consider the available Exchange features and how they may differ from those available in an on-premises implementation of Exchange Server. For a comprehensive comparison of feature availability between Exchange Server 2013 and Exchange Online solutions, see the Exchange Online Service Description. Features are compared across all Exchange Online versions.

The timeframe required to deploy Exchange Online will depend on the complexity of your existing on-premises environment. For larger companies, deployment projects can typically be completed in 8 to 12 weeks. This timeframe may be extended by service request escalations and if larger average mailboxes sizes exist in a customer’s mail environment. Customer network bandwidth can also affect this timeframe.

The Exchange Online deployment tasks are focused on several activities:

  • Exchange Online administration

  • Email migration

  • Hybrid deployments

  • Unified messaging services

Each of these activities is described briefly in the sections that follow. See the Exchange Online Preparation section for more in-depth information on these key deployment tasks.
