Installing SP2 on an array using external load balancing

Updated: February 15, 2013

Applies To: Unified Access Gateway

When working with Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG) in an array that uses an external load balancer, you must take care when installing Service Pack 2. This topic describes how to install SP2 on a Forefront UAG array that is using an external load balancer.

Note the locations of the Setup log files that can help you to troubleshoot installation issues:

  • Setup log files for Forefront TMG are located at %windir%\Temp.

  • Setup log files for Forefront UAG are located at %ProgramData%\Microsoft\UAG\Logs.

To install SP2 on an array using NLB, see Installing SP2 on an array using NLB.

  1. On the external load balancer, make sure that no traffic is routed to the array manager server.

  2. As the administrator, install SP2 on the array manager by double-clicking the UAG-KB2710791-v4.0.2095.10000-ENU.msp file.

    Restart the server.

  3. Start the Forefront UAG Management console and activate the configuration.

  4. Wait until the activation completes successfully on the array manager. Use the Activation Monitor to view the activation progress.

    noteNote:
Activation will be successful only on the array manager. Do not wait for activation to succeed on the array members.

Activation may be unsuccessful on the first attempt. If this happens, activate the configuration a second time and then continue.

  5. On the external load balancer, make sure that traffic is routed to the array manager server.

  6. Check that the activation was successful by browsing to the portal home page from a client endpoint.

  7. For each array member, do the following:

    1. On the external load balancer, make sure that no traffic is routed to the array member.

    2. As the administrator, install SP2 on the array member by double-clicking the UAG-KB2710791-v4.0.2095.10000-ENU.msp file.

      Restart the server.

    3. On the array manager server, activate the configuration.

    4. Wait until the activation completes successfully on the array manager and on the array member on which you installed SP2. Use the Activation Monitor to view the activation progress.

Activation may be unsuccessful on the first attempt. If this happens, activate the configuration a second time and then continue.

    5. On the external load balancer, make sure that traffic is routed to the array member on which you installed SP2.
