Linking a User to a Computer

Updated: December 17, 2012

Applies To: Windows Intune December 2012 Release

Before you can deploy software to a user’s computer, you must link the user to a computer. You can link a user to multiple computers, but each computer can be linked to only one user. Users are automatically linked to any computers that they add to Windows Intune by using the Windows Intune company portal.

By default, all mobile devices users are automatically linked to their devices during discovery. You cannot create or modify user-to-device links for mobile devices by using the Windows Intune administrator console.

You can use the following procedure to link a user to a computer by using the Windows Intune administrator console.

To link a user to a computer

  1. Open the Windows Intune administrator console.

  2. In the workspace shortcuts pane, click the Groups icon.

  3. In the navigation pane, select All Devices or another device group to that contains the computer you want to link to a user.

    noteNote
You can also use the Search devices box to locate a computer by typing the partial or full name of a computer to which you want to link a user.

  4. In the Devices list, click the computer to which you want to link a user, and then click Link User to open the Link User dialog box.

The Link User dialog box displays a list of available users with their display name, user ID, and the number of computers to which each user is currently linked. If a user is already linked to the selected computer, that user’s name and user ID are displayed under Current user . If the computer is orphaned (not linked to any user), No User appears under Current User .

  5. Do one of the following:

    • To leave the computer linked to its current user, if there is one, click Cancel .

    • To remove the link to the current user, if there is one, and not link the computer to any user, click Remove link , and then click OK .

    • To link the computer to a new user, in the All users list, select a user. Each time that you select a new user in the list, the user’s name and user ID are displayed under New user . Confirm that the user data is correct, and then click OK .

      noteNote
You can also use the Search users box to locate a user by typing the partial or full name of a user that you want to link to the computer.

After you have linked users to computers, you can view a computer to determine which user, if any, is linked to it. And, if the computer is linked to a user, you can also link the computer to a different user or remove the link so that the computer is not linked to any user. To do this, in the workspace shortcuts pane, click the Groups icon, in the navigation pane select All Devices , in the Devices list select the computer that you want to view, and then click Link User .
