Troubleshooting the Exchange Connection for Windows Intune

The following table describes error codes that are displayed if you have trouble installing and configuring the Windows Intune Exchange Connector. It includes suggestions for resolving the problem that is represented by each error code.

 

Error Code Possible Problem Suggested Resolution

0x0000001

The Exchange Connector cannot connect to the Exchange Server address

For hosted Exchange servers, verify that the address is correct and reachable.

Verify that the FQDN of the Exchange server that you entered is correct and that the server is running. Exchange Connector does not support Exchange server arrays.

  1. Verify that the Exchange server is up and running.

  2. Ensure that the specified server name or FQDN of the Exchange server is correct.

  3. Verify that the remote PowerShell IIS service on the Exchange server is up and running.

  4. Verify that the Exchange server can be reached from the computer hosting the Exchange Connector service.

  5. Verify that Internet Explorer has the proper proxy settings to reach the Exchange server.

  6. Try to specify the Exchange server using a server name instead of FQDN, or vice versa (as configured when configuring Outlook to access Exchange).

0x0000002

The account has insufficient permissions

The account you are using to access Exchange does not have sufficient permissions to run the following cmdlets: <missing cmdlets>.To enable mobile device management, use an account that has sufficient permissions, then try to connect again.

Ensure that the account used to access Exchange has the necessary permissions to run all the required PowerShell cmdlets.

0x0000004

The version of Exchange is not supported.

The version of Exchange that is running on the server is not supported by the Exchange Connector.

The Exchange server must be running Exchange 2010 SP1 or later.

0x0000005

Windows PowerShell is not installed or enabled.

Verify that Windows PowerShell 2.0 is installed and enabled on this computer.

Verify that Windows PowerShell 2.0 is installed and enabled on the computer hosting the Exchange Connector service.

0x0000006

The Exchange Connector cannot connect to Windows Intune

Verify that you are connected to the Internet, and check the Windows Intune service status, then try to connect again. Windows Intune Service Status

  1. Check the Windows Intune Service Status and then try to connect again.

  2. Verify that the computer hosting the Exchange Connector service has Internet access.

  3. If using a proxy, verify that Internet Explorer proxy settings used by the user when first configuring the Exchange Connector are correct. If changed, open the Exchange Connector configuration UI and reconfigure the connection by clicking Update.

  4. If using a firewall, check that the required ports for communicating with the Windows Intune service are opened.

0x0000007

An Exchange Connector feature is missing

The Exchange Connector certificate is missing. Reinstall the Exchange Connector.

Uninstall the Exchange Connector and then install it again.

0x0000008

Do you want to replace the existing connection?

A connection to your Exchange environment already exists. Only one connection to Exchange can exist at a time.

Click Replace if you want to connect to Exchange from this computer using the details you provided.

You can try one of the following.

  1. Override the existing connection with the new details provided (this will cause the existing connector to shut down)

  2. Remove the existing connection from the Admin console and configure the new connector.

  3. Cancel the configuration attempt and keep the existing connector.

0x0000009

The Exchange connection was deleted

This Exchange connection was deleted from the Windows Intune administrator console. Remove the Exchange Connector installation and then install it again.

Uninstall the Exchange Connector and then install it again.

0x000000a

The Exchange Connector certificate expired

You need to download the latest Exchange Connector installation package. To do this, in the Windows Intune administrator console, go to the Administration workspace, and click Exchange Connector Download.

Uninstall the Exchange Connector and then install it again.

Exchange Connector Error

Try to connect again later or go to the Event Viewer on this computer for more details.

  1. Check the Event Viewer on the computer running the Exchange Connector to get more details about the problem.

  2. Try to perform the task again.

Your Windows Intune account was deleted

You cannot set up the Exchange Connector because your Windows Intune account was deleted.

The Exchange Connector version is not supported

The Exchange Connector version that you are running is no longer supported. Mobile device management will be disabled until you install the latest version of the Exchange Connector.

To download the latest version, in the Windows Intune administrator console, go to the Administration workspace, and click Exchange Connector Download.

Download the latest Exchange Connector setup package from the Exchange Connector Download page in the Windows Intune administrator console, and use it to update the existing connector installation.

0x0000011

The credentials you supplied are not valid

The user account credentials you supplied are not valid.

Verify that the credentials you entered are correct and in the following format: Domain\User.

  1. Verify that the credentials you entered are correct and in the following format: Domain\User.

  2. Try logging in to Exchange using the specified credentials.

0x0000012

The Exchange Connector service failed to start

Go to the System log in the Event Viewer on this computer for more details

  1. Check the Event Viewer on the computer running the Exchange Connector to get more details about the problem, and try to manually start the Exchange Connector service from the Services window.

  2. Reset the password of the WIEC_USER and then and update the password of this user in the Services window, under the Windows Intune Exchange Connector service.

Possible Problem Suggested Resolution

Exchange Cannot Be Contacted

Mobile device management is unavailable because the Exchange Connector cannot contact the following Exchange server

  1. Verify that the Exchange server is up and running

  2. Ensure that the Exchange server can be accessed from the computer that hosts the Exchange Connector

  3. If the name or FQDN of the Exchange server has changed, open the Exchange Connector configuration UI and update the connection

  4. Verify that the remote PowerShell IIS service on the Exchange server is up and running

  5. Verify that the Internet Explorer has the proper proxy settings to reach the Exchange server

The Exchange Connector Has Not Contacted The Service

Mobile device management is unavailable because the Exchange Connector on <computer name> has not contacted the service for more than 30 minutes.

Verify that the Exchange Connector service is running and that the computer that hosts the Exchange Connector has Internet access.

The Exchange Account Has Insufficient Permissions

The account you are using to access Exchange does not have sufficient permissions to run the following cmdlets: <missing cmdlets>. Therefore, mobile device management is not fully enabled.

Ensure that the account used to access Exchange has the necessary permissions to run all the required PowerShell cmdlets.

Users with an Exchange Email Address Must Be Added to Enable Mobile Device Management

Mobile device management is only available for users with an Exchange email address defined. Verify that you added users with an Exchange email address.

The customer needs to define Windows Intune users that have a valid Exchange SMTP address in the Windows Intune account portal.

Exchange Connector Error

Windows Intune failed to perform a mobile device management task because the Exchange Connector on the following computer experienced an error: <computer name>.

  1. Check the Event Viewer on the computer running the Exchange Connector to get more details about the problem.

  2. Try to perform the task again.

A New Exchange Connector Version Is Available

A new version of the Exchange Connector is available. To download the latest version, go to the Administration workspace, and click Exchange Connector Download.

Download the latest Exchange Connector setup package from the Exchange Connector Download page in the Windows Intune administrator console, and use it to update the existing connector installation.

The Exchange Connector Version Is About to Expire

After the following date, the Exchange Connector version that you are running will not be supported: <date> After this date, mobile device management will be disabled until you install the latest version of the Exchange Connector. To download the latest version, go to the Administration workspace, and click Exchange Connector Download.

Download the latest Exchange Connector setup package from the Exchange Connector Download page in the Windows Intune administrator console, and use it to update the existing Exchange Connector installation.

The Exchange Connector Version Is Not Supported

The Exchange Connector version that you are running is no longer supported. Mobile device management will be disabled until you install the latest version of the Exchange Connector. To download the latest version, go to the Administration workspace, and click Exchange Connector Download.

Active Directory Sites Cannot Be Contacted

The Exchange Connector cannot access any of the Exchange servers in the following Active Directory sites: <site name(s)>. Windows Intune cannot manage any mobile devices associated with mailboxes in these sites.

Provide access for the computer hosting the Exchange Connector to the Exchange services on the listed Active Directory sites.

Events encountered by the Windows Intune Exchange Connector are written to the Event Viewer under Windows Logs and then Application. You can view the events related to the Windows Intune Exchange Connector by filtering the Source column to search for Windows Intune Exchange Connector.

Cannot download the setup package

  1. If you cannot download the setup package, it is possible that your browser settings blocked the download.

  2. Change the security settings in your browser to allow file download.

Exchange Connector does not open

  1. If you installed the Exchange Connector successfully but it stops working and you cannot open the configuration, make sure you installed it on the correct version of Windows Server.

  2. Make sure you are not running the Server Core Role. It is not supported to work with the Exchange Connector.
