Best Practices for Software Distribution in Windows Intune

Updated: December 17, 2012

Applies To: Windows Intune

This section describes the procedure for validating your deployment, both for required install deployments and available install software that is deployed to the Windows Intune company portal.

Validate Your Deployment

Now that you understand the overall process of deploying your software, we strongly recommend that you test your deployment before rolling it out to your users.

Typical Computer Required Install Deployment Test Scenario

  1. Gather the information that is required for creating a deployment package, described in Planning for Software Distribution in Windows Intune.

  2. Use Windows Intune to create a test device group that includes devices that use operating systems and configurations resembling those of the targeted devices in your organization.

  3. Configure the settings for silent installation, if applicable, (and custom installation, if you want), according to the documentation for your software. For an example, to review the settings for a silent installation of Microsoft Office 2010, see Configure a silent installation of Office 2010.

  4. Run the installation locally and troubleshoot as necessary.

  5. Run the installation under the local “system” account, and troubleshoot as necessary. You might want to use the Sysinternals PsExec tool to help with this step. For more information, see PsExec.

  6. When you have resolved all outstanding issues, proceed to uploading your deployment package to Windows Intune.

  7. Distribute the software to the test group that you created in step 2 of this procedure, and troubleshoot as necessary.

  8. When you have resolved all issues, deploy your managed software package to the devices in your organization.

Typical Mobile Device Available Install Deployment Test Scenario

  1. Gather the information that is required for creating an iOS, Android, or Windows Phone deployment package, described in Planning for Software Distribution in Windows Intune.

  2. By using Windows Intune, create a test user group that includes a user whose mobile device conforms to the required mobile device requirements and that you can later check to see if the software is indeed deployed.

  3. Upload the application and deploy it to the test user group as an available install.

  4. Go to the Windows Intune company portal and check that the application is available and install it on the mobile device. Troubleshoot as necessary.

  5. When you have resolved all outstanding issues, you can deploy the application to more users in your organization.
