Identifying Computers managed by Windows Intune on which Updates Failed to Install

The Windows Intune administrator console provides several views that display which computers have failed updates. You can view lists by computer or by update, and then view details about the update and the computer on which the failure occurred. The following procedure provides one way to perform this task.

To identify computers that have failed updates

  1. Open the Windows Intune administrator console.

  2. In the workspace shortcuts pane, click the Groups icon.

  3. In the Update Status area of the Groups Overview page, if there is a red status icon, it indicates the number of computers that have approved updates that were not successfully installed. Click Devices with failures.

  4. A list appears that displays the computers sorted by name. This list displays the following information:

    • The number of approved updates that were not successfully installed.

    • The date and time of the most recent status update for each computer.

  5. Select the name of one of the computers in the list, and click View Properties. The Computer Properties page appears.

  6. In the Update Status area, click Failed Updates. A list of approved updates that were not successfully installed on the selected computer is displayed. You can see details about each update by selecting the name and clicking View Properties.

Resolve Update Installation Failures

Resolving update installation failures begins with discovering why the installation failed. As soon as the cause of the failure is determined, perform one of the following tasks:

  • Fix the cause of the failure, and then monitor the computer to confirm that the installation succeeded on the next installation attempt. You do not need to take any action on the update if the problem was on the computer itself. The update automatically will be offered to the computer again.

  • Determine whether the installation failed for an acceptable reason, such as incompatible hardware, or that the issue cannot be resolved at this point.

For a failed update, the administrator can click the KB Article link, located on the preview pane, to view online information related to the update failure.
