This topic provides guidance about how you can add or configure the primary and back up phone information used for additional security verification when signing in to your account.
Additional security verification settings are used when an admin has configured your account to require that both your password and a response from your phone must be used to verify your identity. For more information about why phones are used as a secondary verification method, see Why use phones as a security verification method?.
Note |
|---|
| You cannot use a Lync-based IP phone with additional security verification. |
Add a primary phone
Use the following procedure to configure a primary phone for your profile on the additional security verification settings page.
Tip |
|---|
| Consider making your primary phone your mobile phone. That way, if you need to sign-in remotely, you will still be able to sign-in. |
-
Sign in to your account and choose one of the following options to either add or change your primary phone information:
-
If this is the first time you are signing in since your account was configured to use additional security verification, proceed to the next step, and then before clicking Save follow the steps in the next procedure to add a backup phone.
-
If you are using the Windows Azure AD Preview Portal, at the top-right corner of the page click your user name, click profile, click security settings, click additional security verification, and then proceed to the next step.
-
If you are using the Windows Azure Management Portal, at the top-right corner of the page click your user name, click Additional security verification, and then proceed to the next step.

If this is the first time you are signing in since your account was configured to use additional security verification, proceed to the next step, and then before clicking Save follow the steps in the next procedure to add a backup phone.
-
On the additional security verification settings page, under primary phone, type your phone number, and then determine if you would prefer to be contacted by voice or by SMS. If you prefer SMS, select the Text me instead of calling check box.
Caution If you select the Text me instead of calling option and a country or region other than the United States, you may incur international charges for SMS each time you sign in. -
Click Save.
Note If you have not previously configured a backup phone, we recommend that you jump to step 2 in the procedure below to configure at least one backup phone number, before you click Save. This will increase your chances of being reached in cases where you forget your primary phone. -
The Microsoft verification system will attempt to contact your primary phone at this time. Follow the instructions on your phone to complete the phone verification process.
Add a backup phone
A backup phone is an important method to ensure that you can always gain access to your work e-mail and services. Use the following procedure to configure a backup phone for your profile on the additional security verification settings page.
Tip |
|---|
| Consider making your backup phone your desk phone at work. That way, if you should forget your cell phone at home, you will still be able to sign-in. |
