Installing SP3 on an array using NLB

Updated: February 15, 2013

Applies To: Unified Access Gateway

When working with Forefront Unified Access Gateway (UAG) in an array that uses Network Load Balancing (NLB), you must take care when installing Service Pack 3. This topic describes how to install SP3 on a Forefront UAG array that is using NLB.

Note the locations of the Setup log files that can help you to troubleshoot installation issues:

  • Setup log files for Forefront TMG are located at %windir%\Temp.

  • Setup log files for Forefront UAG are located at %ProgramData%\Microsoft\UAG\Logs.

To install SP3 on an array using an external load balancer, see Installing SP3 on an array using external load balancing.

  1. On the array manager server, in the Forefront UAG Management console, on the Admin menu, click Web Monitor.

  2. In Web Monitor, under Array Monitor, click Current Status.

  3. In the Array Monitor, under Nodes, select the check box for the array manager. Then, in the drop-down list, click Drain Stop, and click Apply.

    noteNote:
For a Forefront UAG DirectAccess-only deployment, in the drop-down list click Stop, click Apply, and then continue with step 6.

  4. Wait until all sessions have finished.

To check the number of sessions, in Web Monitor, under Session Monitor, click Current Status.

  5. In the Array Monitor, under Nodes, select the check box for the array manager. Then, in the drop-down list, click Suspend, and click Apply.

  6. Exit the Forefront UAG Management console and close Web Monitor.

  7. As the administrator, install SP3 on the array manager by double-clicking the UAG-KB2744025-v4.0.3123.10000-ENU.msp file.

    Restart the server.

  8. Start the Forefront UAG Management console and activate the configuration.

  9. Wait until the activation completes successfully on the array manager. Use the Activation Monitor to view the activation progress.

    noteNote:
Activation will be successful only on the array manager. Do not wait for activation to succeed on the array members.

Activation may be unsuccessful on the first attempt. If this happens, activate the configuration a second time and then continue.

  10. On the array manager, in Web Monitor, under Array Monitor, click Current Status.

  11. In the Array Monitor, under Nodes, select the check box for the array manager, in the drop-down list click Resume, and then click Apply. When the NLB status changes to Stopped, in the drop-down list click Start, and then click Apply.

    noteNote:
For a Forefront UAG DirectAccess-only deployment, in the drop-down list, do not click Resume; instead click Start, and then click Apply.

  12. Check that the activation was successful by browsing to the portal home page from a client endpoint.

  13. For each array member, do the following:

    1. On the array manager, in the Array Monitor, under Nodes, select the check box for the array member. Then, in the drop-down list, click Drain Stop, and then click Apply.

      noteNote:
For a Forefront UAG DirectAccess-only deployment, in the drop-down list click Stop, click Apply, and then continue with step d.

    2. Wait until all sessions have finished on the member that you stopped.

To check the number of sessions, on the array member, in Web Monitor, under Session Monitor, click Current Status.

    3. On the array manager, in the Array Monitor, under Nodes, select the check box for the array member. Then, in the drop-down list click Suspend, and click Apply.

    4. As the administrator, install SP3 on the array member by double-clicking the UAG-KB2744025-v4.0.3123.10000-ENU.msp file.

      Restart the server.

    5. On the array manager server, activate the configuration.

    6. Wait until the activation completes successfully on the array manager and on the array member on which you have installed SP3. Use the Activation Monitor to view the activation progress.

Activation may be unsuccessful on the first attempt. If this happens, activate the configuration a second time and then continue.

    7. On the array manager, in Web Monitor, under Array Monitor, click Current Status.

    8. In the Array Monitor, under Nodes, select the check box for the array member on which you have installed SP3. Then, in the drop-down list click Resume, and click Apply. When the NLB status changes to Stopped, in the drop-down list click Start, and then click Apply.

      noteNote:
For a Forefront UAG DirectAccess-only deployment, in the drop-down list, do not click Resume; instead click Start, and then click Apply.
