1This SQL Server edition can be upgraded to SQL Server 2008 R2 on the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64) of a 64-bit server. Failover Clusters are not supported in the WOW mode. If you currently have SQL Server 2000, or SQL Server 2005 failover clusters on the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64) upgrade of the failover cluster to SQL Server 2008 R2 is not supported.

2Changing the edition of a SQL Server 2008 R2 failover cluster is limited. The following edition change scenarios are not supported for SQL Server 2008 R2 failover clusters:

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise to SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer, Standard, or Evaluation.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer to SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard or Evaluation.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard to SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation.

  • SQL Server 2008 R2 Evaluation to SQL Server 2008 R2 Standard.

3Upgrade of SQL Server 2000 (64-Bit) IA64 failover clusters are not supported.

4Upgrade of SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services to SQL Server 2008 R2 is not supported on failover clusters.

5Upgrade of SQL Server 2000 (64-Bit) will not install SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Tools. To install Management Tools, you must re-run Setup after the upgrade is complete.

6Edition change from SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer to SQL Server 2008 R2 Web is supported only on SQL Server 2008 R2 stand-alone installations.

7Edition change from SQL Server 2008 R2 Datacenter to SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise is supported on SQL Server 2008 R2 stand-alone and failover cluster installations.

8If you are upgrading from SQL Server Evaluation to SQL Server Web or SQL Server Workgroup, you must uninstall Analysis Services before you run the edition upgrade.

Upgrade Notes

  • Cross-version instances of SQL Server 2008 R2 are not supported. Version numbers of the Database Engine, Analysis Services, and Reporting Services components must be the same in an instance of SQL Server 2008 R2.

  • Before upgrading SQL Server, enable Windows Authentication for SQL Server Agent and verify the default configuration: that the SQL Server Agent service account is a member of the SQL Server sysadmin group.

  • Before upgrading from one edition of SQL Server 2008 R2 to another, verify that the functionality you are currently using is supported in the edition to which you are upgrading. For more information, see the section for your components in Features Supported by the Editions of SQL Server 2008 R2.

  • Cross-platform upgrade is not supported. You cannot upgrade a 32-bit instance of SQL Server to native 64-bit. However, you can upgrade a 32-bit instance of SQL Server to the WOW64: the 32-bit subsystem on a 64-bit server as noted in the table above. You can also back up or detach databases from a 32-bit instance of SQL Server, and then restore or attach them to an instance of SQL Server (64-bit) if the databases are not published in replication. In this case, you must also re-create any logins and other user objects in master, msdb, and model system databases.

  • To upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2, you must be running a supported operating system. For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2008 R2.

  • Upgrade will be blocked if there is a pending restart.

  • Upgrade will be blocked if the Windows Installer service is not running.

  • Upgrade will be blocked if performance counters are corrupt.

  • To upgrade an instance of SQL Server to a SQL Server failover cluster, the instance being upgraded must be a failover cluster. To upgrade a stand-alone instance of SQL Server to a SQL Server failover cluster, install a new SQL Server failover cluster and then migrate user databases from the stand-alone instance by using the Copy Database Wizard. For more information about upgrade, see How to: Upgrade a SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance (Setup). For more information about database migration, see Using the Copy Database Wizard.

You cannot add components to an existing installation of SQL Server at the time you upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2.After you upgrade an instance of SQL Server to SQL Server 2008 R2, you can add features by using the SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation Wizard: Setup.exe.

For more information about cross-language support and considerations for installing SQL Server in localized languages, see Local Language Versions in SQL Server.
