Recovering Instances of Notification Services

To fully recover an instance of Notification Services, you need backups of databases that contain instance and application data, the instance configuration, application definitions, subscription management interfaces, custom components, and any other operational files required by your applications.

When you recover an instance of Notification Services, you are recovering one or more of the following:

  • Servers that host engine components, which include hosted event providers, generators, and distributors.
  • Servers that host client components, which include subscription management interfaces and non-hosted event providers.
  • Servers that host the instance and application databases.

Important

Depending on your system configuration, your recovery instructions might vary from the instructions below. It is very important that you create and test your own recovery instructions for your instances and applications.

During recovery, if you move the databases to a new database server, you must update the SQL Server system name in the instance configuration, run nscontrol repair, update the instance of Notification Services to apply the changes, and then update the registry on each computer that runs a component of the instance.

If you move engine components, which include hosted event providers, generators, and distributors, you must update the system name values in the application definitions and then update the instance of Notification Services.

If you move client components, you only need to register the instance of Notification Services on the client component server.
